ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - We now know a show horse valued at $20,000 was killed in a massive fire that destroyed a barn in Rome's outer district Monday night. Fire crews arrived at the scene shortly after 5pm to find a barn engulfed in flames on Elmer Hill Road.

It took crews an hour and twenty minutes to bring the fire under control. The crews will likely remain there for much of the night-- working to put out hotspots.

Rome's deputy fire chief says they were having trouble with the water pressure in the area-- hindering the fight against the flames. Crews also worked to make sure the fire didn't spread to nearby homes. "That was our main concern, the structures, the exposures, the house across the street and the house next door. That's what we were concerned with," said Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Palinski.

Palinski says he was told the horse was staying inside the barn and did not make it out alive. As of 9pm Monday evening, the horse had still not been located.

The Rome Fire Department was helped out at the scene by crews from Lake Delta, Westernville and Lee Center.
