A Latina woman's frame of reference? It's the family, says new study

Hispanic women tend to feel more fulfilled in their lives than non-Hispanic women, according to a new small-scale market study, “Can a Latina Have it All?”

It’s not that Latinas don’t want some of the same things as “general market women,” but that they have a different frame of reference, says Angela A. Rodriguez, director of Strategic Insights at Alma, a Hispanic advertising agency, and author of the study.  “A ‘home,’ for instance, doesn’t necessarily mean a large house with a white picket fence, but simply a place of gathering for their families.

“They define their happiness,” says Rodriguez. “They’re saying that they want peace of mind, education, and a home.”

According to Rodriguez, Latinas are more grateful and perceive success in a profoundly more positive way. “Even if they’re second or third generation, they’re still very close to their roots and it’s hard to separate them from kind of the hardship of being an immigrant and the struggles they may have faced or have seen their families face,” she says.

The study found that 91 percent of the participants agreed with the statement: “I have more choices for what to make of my life than my mother had,” and 78 percent of young Hispanic women believed that that balancing work and family was a luxury they were grateful for.

“So when you ask them about having it all, that picture is so recent in their minds. They’re grateful that they have the choice, that they have the luxury of trying to figure out a balance between work and family,” Rodriguez says. “It’s not the struggle to find balance because their life is so much easier than what they maybe grew up with.”

Rodriguez also points out that some of these women grew up in tough situations, so making the difficult decision to stay at home and lose income is something that may come more naturally to them. Many may already have the skills to rebalance their budgets.

The authors of the study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to gather their information. Three hundred and seventy one Hispanic women from an online research community were surveyed online and 20 were ultimately handpicked for in-depth interviews to further explore their views. They ranged in income and educational attainment, but all felt and self-identified as middle class.

The participants belonged to two different groups– “Preservers” and “Fusionistas.” The Preserver Women are defined as Spanish-oriented with high Hispanic cultural affinity. They retain most of their Hispanic culture and family values, and are mostly foreign born.

The Fusionista Women are those who are English-oriented with a dual cultural affinity. While they have ties with both cultures, their Hispanic affinity is as intense as Preservers’, and although they tend to be English dominant, Spanish is an essential cultural connection.

Rodriguez says that the discourse about “leaning in” and “having it all” has excluded Hispanic women and other women of color, which is one of the reasons she set off to do this research.

“There were women who were saying, ‘You know what? It’s different for women who aren’t in a privileged situation. It’s different for women who can’t have a nanny,’ ” she says.

Rodriguez says that for “general market” women, there’s a certain amount of identity that is rooted in their job, no matter what it is. She believes this is is an individualistic and very American idea. “When we talked to Hispanic women, it just wasn’t there,” she says. “They just didn’t need the kind of identity that work gives them in that same way.”

Two-thirds of the respondents, whether currently employed or not, reported being “happy with the work opportunities that are in front of them.”

The most surprising part of her research, Rodriguez says, was when she interviewed college-educated women. She tells the story of a 27-year-old nurse who decided to stop working to take care of her children. The  young woman was optimistic about her choice and never felt like she had lost a part of herself. Rodriguez also spoke to an engineer with a Masters degree who decided to stay home with her children and was not at all conflicted about her choice. Not surprisingly, the study found that family was the center of most of these women’s lives.

Rodriguez believes that whether a young Latina stays home full time, part time or not at all, her choice is not about what she gives up, but what she gains in that process.

On the eve of the Solheim Cup, a novice's guide to Colorado golf

Golf has often been described as a lovely walk spoiled by a little white ball ? and that's by the sport's ardent fans.

But the old joke notwithstanding, golf also offers a delightful mix of challenges and pleasures, not to mention exercise and scenic beauty, to participants. One of the lures of golf is that even terrible players will usually get off one admirable shot during a round, and, as anyone who has ever played the game will tell you, that's enough to keep you coming back for more.

Colorado seems to be enjoying a new boost in national prestige as a golf destination.

The Solheim Cup will be played at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker on Aug. 13-18, with the first day of competition Aug. 16. The event pits a team of United States golfers from the Ladies Professional Golf Association against a European team.

Launched in 2007, the Colorado Golf Club has drawn national praise for its beauty, which takes in Front Range views on a pine-studded course. In 2011 it hosted the Senior PGA championship, which saw crowds thronged around its massive stone-and-timber clubhouse.

While Colorado hasn't become a golf mecca quite in the way that California or the Carolinas are, it offers terrific courses, some with long histories of major tournaments.

Cherry Hills Country Club hosted the U.S. Open in 1938, 1960 and 1978, and the PGA Championship in 1941 and 1985. The BMW Championship will arrive in 2014.

The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 1995 and 2011, the U.S. Senior Open in 2008, and U.S. Amateur Championships in 1959 and 1967.

Golf's status in the state is shown in these numbers:

Colorado has 239 golf courses generating nearly 11,000 jobs, according to ProCon.org, a California firm that assembles data on related issues. In 2012, they created $560 million in direct economic output.

So what is the appeal of golf in the Centennial State?

For starters, there is the scenic beauty. Sure, you can enjoy ocean views at South Carolina golf destinations such as Hilton Head and Kiawah Island. Ditto for Pebble Beach in California.

But there is something special about playing 18 holes with a Rocky Mountain backdrop, especially when it's a snowcapped peak and you're in a short-sleeved shirt.

Beyond that ? and tournament directors love this ? there is the reliable weather. The state enjoys 300-plus sunny days a year, and temperatures in non-snowy months tend to be in a friendly zone on the thermometer, unlike, say, Arizona, where a noon tee-time in the summer can be a death sentence.

You even get wildlife sightings. It seems like several times a year, there will be photographs or videos of some critter wandering onto the course: deer, elk, even bruins.

One other reason for the surge in major golf events: Colorado's golf courses are trying harder to land them.

"We had been thinking about this event from the time the club opened," said Tom Ferrell, the Colorado Golf Club's marketing director. "One of our original developers was a teaching pro who had worked extensively with a number of LPGA players, so we were familiar with the event and knew that it would be a great one to bring to the Colorado fan base."

The club's final pitch to the LPGA came in May 2009s.

It's the first Solheim Cup west of the Mississippi River.

"The golf course is absolutely stunning in terms of physical beauty, and is somewhat unique in Colorado with its foothills setting."

The Colorado Golf Club is part of a general push by local clubs to elevate their profile.

"I think the reason there are more major tournaments being held in the state is that we are actively seeking them through the USGA, LPGA and other associations," said Russ Miller of the Broadmoor. "Back in 2000, we made it one of our priorities to host more USGA championships. At that point, we began the dialogue with the executives and decision-makers of the USGA and were able to acquire both the 2008 U.S. Senior Open and the 2011 U.S. Women's Open."

Miller added that he felt championships return because of the "tremendous support" from the community, not just in ticket sales but in volunteer support and corporate hospitality.

And success breeds success, notes Neal Reid, who is handling public relations for the Solheim Cup.

"Having these legends come through here really helps put these courses on the map," Reid says. "I also think the players really enjoy golfing at altitude. The ball travels more, and the scenery is great. And the crowd support is fantastic.

"There are a lot of components to putting together a successful tournament, and Colorado offers the full package," he said. "These courses have everything on a tournament organizer's checklist."

While the Colorado Golf Club, which hosts the Solheim Cup, is an invitation-only private operation, other top courses in the state are open to the general public, although there are sometimes caveats.

The Broadmoor, for instance, is a membership club, but non-members who are willing to book a stay in the resort hotel can get tee times at one of its three courses.

SOME TOP PUBLIC COURSES IN COLORADO?

Feel like being more than a tournament spectator and actually playing a round of golf? Many top-flight courses are membership only, which means you must be a member of an invited guest. but there are plenty of public courses that make for a lovely walk with that little white ball. among them:

City Park Golf Course ? a deceptively challenging 18-hole course with beautiful views of the downtown skyline and rocky mountains. 2500 york st., 720-865-3410

Evergreen Golf Course ? This 18-hole course features many hillside lies and forested areas, which demand smart play. 29614 Upper Bear Creek Road, Evergreen. 720-865-3430

Wellshire Golf Course ? Regulation 18-hole course designed by Donald Ross in 1926, it's long been considered one of the nation's best public courses. 3333 S. Colorado Blvd., 303-757-1353

Willis Case Golf Course ? Just seven minutes northwest of downtown Denver, you get panoramic views in a layout that runs through mature stands of trees. This course can play tricky with its well-bunkered holes. 4999 Vrain Stree, 720-865-0700

man wakes up from coma speaking fluent chinese

A UNIVERSITY student who cheated death in a horror car crash woke up from a coma speaking fluent CHINESE.

Ben McMahon suffered serious head injuries in the accident near his home in Melbourne, Australia last year.

When he came around from a week-long coma his first words to a nurse were in Mandarin.

Ben, 21, explained: "Most of it's hazy, but when I woke up seeing a Chinese nurse, I thought I was in China.

"It was like a dream. It was surreal - it was like my brain was in one place but my body in another.

"I just started speaking Chinese - they were the first words that left my mouth."

Ben studied Mandarin at school, but had never managed to master the language.

Since the crash he has turned his newfound skills into two new careers - as a tour guide and a budding TV star.

Ben runs Chinese language tours around his native Melbourne.

And he's one of three hosts of a TV variety show for Chinese expats called Au My Ga (Oh My God).

He says of the show: "It aims to promote and advance the understanding between Australia and China."

Republican governor Perry defends Texas abortion measure

WASHINGTON | Sun Jul 14, 2013 12:57pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Governor Rick Perry on Sunday defended a measure passed by the Texas legislature to ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, saying states - not the federal government - should decide such matters and rejecting criticism that the law would shut down most of the state's abortion clinics.

The Republican-controlled legislature gave final passage to the measure on Friday and sent it to the Republican governor to sign into law. Perry had called a second special session of the legislature to get the bill passed.

"Most people, I think, in this country - and in Texas, certainly - believe that six months is too late to be deciding whether or not these babies should be aborted or not. And we put the limit at five months in this bill," Perry told the CNN program "State of the Union."

The Texas measure marks the latest effort by Republicans at the state level to impose new restrictions on abortions, which were legalized nationally in a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

"This gets back to the issue of should the states be able to make these decisions or should we allow this big, cumbersome federal government to decide for all of us," Perry added. "I happen to be one of the people that believes that the federal government should do a few things and do them well, and then allow the states to make the decisions on these types of issues."

The Texas measure would make Texas the 13th of the 50 U.S. states to pass a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy - a provision based on disputed research suggesting fetuses feel pain at that point. Current limits are 26 weeks in Texas.

The measure also would impose a series of new requirements on abortion clinics and doctors who perform abortions, mandating that doctors have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic and creating stricter guidelines for how doctors administer abortion-inducing drugs.

Critics, led by Democratic state Senator Wendy Davis, have said the restrictions could force most of the abortion clinics in Texas to close, prompting Texas women to turn to illegal, unsafe means if they want an abortion.

"Well, I don't agree with her premise and I don't agree with her numbers," Perry said, referring to Davis, who he has criticized in recent weeks in highly personal terms. "And I think history will prove that she is wrong by asserting that."

Perry, who last Monday announced that he would not seek re-election in 2014, sidestepped a question about whether he will run for U.S. president in 2016. He mounted an unsuccessful run for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Jeter to miss weekend series with quad strain

NEW YORK (AP) ? Derek Jeter was not going to take it easy, not after spending 91 agonizing games sidelined with a broken ankle. That's not Jeter.

At 39 years old, the New York Yankees captain might not have been ready to return to the team at his desired level of play.

In his first game this season, Jeter strained his right quadriceps in his third at-bat Thursday. He will miss the weekend series against Minnesota, and New York won't rule out a return to the disabled list.

"It's frustrating. I don't know what else you want me to say," Jeter said in a statement Friday. "I worked hard to get to the point of rejoining the team yesterday. It's not how you draw it up, but hopefully I'll be back out there soon and help this team win some games."

After just four rehabilitation games, the Yankees pushed up the star shortstop's return one day after Brett Gardner and Travis Hafner got hurt Wednesday night. Jeter had been telling the team he was ready to return, and general manager Brian Cashman said reports from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre were positive.

So Jeter returned to a huge ovation and beat out an infield hit in his first at-bat. He also scored a run and had an RBI on a groundout that ended in a close play at first. He was pinch hit for in the eighth inning.

"The way the game unraveled in his first two at-bats, they were go get'em situations, and Derek's going to do everything he can to succeed, and his body said not yet," Cashman said. "Is that because of his age or more so maybe what he's coming back from? ... It's hard to say."

Either way, Jeter is out again. An MRI showed a grade one strain.

Jeter, of course, was against going straight to the disabled list. The plan is to keep the shortstop out for the three-game series against the Twins, and then he will have four days for the All-Star break to receive further treatment before the Yankees reevaluate. After the break, they start a series at Boston on July 19.

"We'll have to give it some time and see how he responds," said Cashman, who added that Jeter's ankle is fine.

Cashman wouldn't blame age as a factor for Jeter's latest injury: "I don't want to say it's Father Time knocking on his door."

But manager Joe Girardi was realistic about how he uses the Yankees career hits leader.

"I don't think it's a guy that you can run out there 40, 50 days in a row like you used to," Girardi said. "You're going to have to manage that."

In a season full of makeshift lineups because of absent former All-Stars, the Yankees appear to have been snakebit twice.

Call it DL 2.0.

Jeter joins Mark Teixeira (wrist surgery), outfielder Curtis Granderson (broken pinkie) and catcher Francisco Cervelli (broken hand), who have been hurt and then had setbacks or second injuries.

Teixeira returned briefly before season-ending surgery. Cervelli developed a stress reaction and is shut down for now. Granderson, who broke his forearm in his first at-bat in spring training only to be hit again after eight games back, was just cleared Thursday to take dry swings, Cashman said.

Alex Rodriguez (hip surgery) was due to play seven innings for Class-A Tampa on Friday night, but the game was rained out. He is just 2 for 15 in his rehab assignment with one RBI.

Cashman was eager to get his stars back but with all the setbacks and uncertainty, he can expect to explore trades as the July 31 deadline approaches.

"When they're healthy they're getting plugged in," Cashman said. "And we'll be willing to sink or swim with them but don't misunderstand that we're not going to try to reinforce other aspects when we can, if we can. But we really do look forward to getting those guys back."

Either way, Girardi thinks the team, which is 50-42 despite all the injuries, will do just fine.

"This group has been pretty good about moving on," he said.

NOTE: The Yankees completed a contract with their third first-round draft pick, Aaron Judge, No. 32 overall for $1.8 million. The outfielder out of Fresno State was a compensation pick for losing Nick Swisher to free agency.

Microsoft adds new hardware certification requirements for Windows 8.1

We are just a month away before Microsoft?s new Windows 8.1 is sent to the OEMs. But just before that, the company has revealed some new hardware requirements for Windows 8.1 certified devices. At Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft announced all the new prerequisites.

?

Reportedly, all certified Windows 8.1 systems will have to support Bluetooth on all devices with Wi-Fi. Moreover, systems with integrated displays like tablets, notebooks and all-in-ones will be required to support front-facing 720p cameras. It has also stated high-fidelity audio requirements for speakers and microphones. In 2015, all certified Windows devices will have to support TPM 2.0 or Trusted Platform Module, which is a spec and implementation for a cryptoprocessor. We may not see these prerequisites for a while, as they will be implemented for devices starting 2014 and 2015.

?

The table below shows all the new hardware requirements for Windows 8.1.

New updates

?

?

?

Working closely with OEMs, Microsoft is striving to bring touch-enabled, sleeker and lighter devices that will come with prolonged battery life. Later this year, we can expect systems that will be using the latest features of the Windows 8.1 such as NFC and biometric authentication, portrait-mode enhancements and InstantGo (new name for connected standby).

?

With rumours about Microsoft working on the next Surface tablet, these features could likely be the prerequisites for the tablet. This also means the next generation Surface tablet could come with a superior hardware set.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition (video)

The Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition -- two of the same handsets on the outside, but very different on the inside. How well will they perform against one another? Read on to find out.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa featured

We just recently took a look at the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition, and now we?re going to get a more in-depth view between it and the original Galaxy S4. Generally, the two devices are very similar, however, a lot has changed when it comes to software.

We?re going to coast through many of the different aspects of this review, as the GPE is quite literally the same phone from top to bottom, from design to battery, as the original Galaxy S4. If somehow you still don?t know much about the S4 after all of the coverage we have on Android Authority, feel free to check out my full review.

In a rush? Jump straight to the video, otherwise, stick with us as we take a closer look at these two devices.

Design

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa design

When it comes to design, you have the very same device that makes handling a 5-inch screen about as easy as it gets. It has Samsung?s usual button layout, and that same plastic body that everyone either loves or hates. I will admit that for the Galaxy S4 in general, I personally like it in white.

Display

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa display

Both phones bring Samsung?s signature Super AMOLED display capable of 1080p resolution, rated at 441ppi. As you might know by now, the panel is highly saturated, and on the original Galaxy S4 you can customize the general motif. Love it or hate it, the high saturation makes Android 4.2 look gorgeous on this screen.

Performance

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa performance

As for performance, it is handled in both phones by the Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.9GHz, backed by an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. However, the Google Play Edition should yield smoother and faster speeds simply because it isn?t jam-packed with all of the features and bloatware in TouchWiz.

On the other hand, whichever device you choose to run with, the experience with be fluid and easy either way.

Hardware

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa hardware

You still get the same removable battery and microSD card slot between the two phones, allowing for the expansion of power or the built-in 16 or 32GB of storage. Unfortunately, only 16GB models are available when it comes to the Google Play Edition.

All of the sensors and the IR blasters make a return in the Google-ified rendition, but as you?ll see in the software section, they aren?t?all?put to use.

Battery and camera

Battery life is pretty much the same, as the 2,600 mAh unit found in either device allows for a full, busy day of work. Keep in mind that you lose all of the power saving features from the original Galaxy S4?s TouchWiz settings, as you?re getting pure, vanilla Android here, and not an OEM skin.

In other words, you won?t be able to rely on theme to eke out that list bit of power anymore.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa camera

And now, we get to the big changes ? starting with the camera. The 13-megapixel rear shooter in the original S4 was very well received ? it provides great detail in pictures, and it brought a level of vibrancy to every photo. Much like everything else, the camera optics remain the same, but the camera app is where things have changed the most.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa s4 camera modes

TouchWiz has been replaced with vanilla Android, so you won?t get all of the modes and settings that makes the Galaxy S4?s camera app stand out from the rest. As you might expect, it was replaced with the stock Android camera, which loses everything from Eraser mode and the Drama mode to the dual recording. However, that might not be a bad thing.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa gpe camera modde

Instead, you get a different interface that uses touch and swipe arch menus that do make sense for touchscreens. It?s an unobtrusive interface that also brings HDR, some scene modes, and of course, the Photo Sphere.

It doesn?t look like the modes are all that you lose in the transition from the original S4, though. In taking some reference shots, it looks like the original Galaxy S4 software helped bring sharpness to pictures.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa camera 2 samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa camera 1

It was an uncharacteristically cloudy summer day in Southern California but you can still see the detail in either photo. Zoomed out, it doesn?t look so bad, but once you get closer, you see that level of sharpness that was lost.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa camera 1-2samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa camera 2-2

Low light performance remains largely the same, but you can kind of see a little more saturation in the original S4. I took a flash shot for posterity, but it served as a final example of how the original S4?s software does help boost the sharpness, ultimately producing a better looking photo.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa camera 4

So, it looks like you lose a little more than just modes and features in this transition. That?s not to say that the picture don?t look good in the Google Play Edition. On the contrary, the pictures look great on either device. However, when you zoom in is when you get a better idea of what you?re getting.

All in all, it comes down to whether or not you want all of these extras and modes for a feature-filled camera experience. Don?t get us wrong, the stock Android camera is good looking, but it only gives you the bare essentials, and for people looking for an above average camera experience, that just may not fly with them.

Software

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa software

And finally, we arrive at the crux of this comparison ? the software. I?m already seeing in the comments for the GPE full review that the software is a little polarizing. On the one hand, we love our stock Android because it doesn?t try too hard, and it manages to look great in the process. But when you put it against the full featured TouchWiz of the original Galaxy S4, some people think Jelly Bean is overly simplistic. Both are good points, depending on where you stand, when it comes down to it, it?s a matter of preference. There?s something for everybody here.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa s4 features

Samsung packed the S4 with a ton of extras, right down to the way you navigate. The sensors for air and hand gestures are just a couple examples and then you have S Health and WatchON apps. While you might not use everything all the time, there may be those few instances when they come in handy. Some people might get overwhelmed seeing all of the extras, but now that can be avoided with the Google Play Edition.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa gpe jelly bean

The latest version of vanilla Android, Jelly Bean, is very stripped down. It doesn?t take advantage of all the various sensors and hardware additions Samsung originally put in. You get your homescreens, original notification dropdown with the shade for settings, and one of the more coveted features of Jelly Bean, Google Now.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa s4 s health

I understand those out there who think that it is a waste with all the potential the Galaxy S4 provides. On the app side, it?s possible to replicate what the original brought to the table. S Health can be replaced with other health apps, and possibly some that are even better, quality wise. I?m sure there are some WatchON equivalents out in the wild, too.

All those gestures and new ways of navigating are left by the wayside, unfortunately. Maybe in the future developers will make apps that do use those sensors, but right now that isn?t the case. In the end, Jelly Bean on the Galaxy S4 is given a boost by the hardware, just not all of it. It?s elegant, simple, and easy to use ? but it might be too simple for some.

Video review

Price and final thoughts

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa price

All that lost potential really does make the price hard to swallow for some. The Google Play Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is around the top price as the original was upon release ? $649, which is about the top cap for the original Galaxy S4 nowadays.

And so, there you have it. The Samsung Galaxy S4 was given a refreshing new look and feel with the transition to vanilla Android 4.2. One thing that may make it easier to swallow the price is the faster updates for the Google Play Edition. However, they might not be as fast as Nexus devices, but they?ll still be faster than OEMs, hopefully. Still, you get some benefit from having a stock Android experience.

samsung galaxy s4 vs google play edition aa price 2

Maybe if you thought the S4 was too much, this will be just the right, simplistic fit. If you look at stock Android and wish for more, the original S4 is there for the taking. Or, if you feel stuck with the original Galaxy S4, this Google Play Edition gives you an example of what stock or even custom Android might be like on it. So, you got a few choices here.

9 Android Apps To Improve Security, Privacy

(click image for larger view) Google has rushed to address user criticism of its recent update to Maps for Android by restoring a link to make maps available offline.

On Wednesday, the company announced a new version of Google Maps app for Android smartphones and tablets and plans to update Google Maps for iPhone and iPad.

The update to version 7 added search and navigation improvements, such as Google's card user interface, road problem reports and alternate route suggestions.

But it also removed some features. Google Maps director Daniel Graf said that Google is retiring its Latitude location sharing service (which will be replaced with Google+ location sharing), that My Maps has been disabled (though Google plans to restore it in a future update) and that offline maps for Android is no longer available. "Instead we've created a new way for you to access maps offline by simply entering 'OK Maps' into the search box when viewing the area you want for later," he explained.

[ Get the latest in antitrust litigation. See Apple Conspired To Fix E-book Prices, Court Rules. ]

The change is intriguing because it suggests Google may standardize its spoken command syntax from Google Glass ("OK Glass") across its mobile product line. But it has nonetheless been poorly received: Among those posting reviews on Google Play, it seems about half give the update one or two stars.

"We did hear from users yesterday that were missing the offline functionality, so we decided to do something about it!" a Google spokeswoman said in an email. "Our engineering team worked around the clock to develop the card mentioned in our Google+ post. We hope this makes it easier and faster to cache maps for offline use."

Google's rapid response may reflect wariness about enduring criticism similar to that which Apple weathered when its iOS 6 Maps update disappointed users.

The Google+ post from the Maps team explains that the company has added a "Make this map area available offline" card below the search box, to facilitate saving maps for offline use. In addition, the company has added a "Where's Latitude?" link at the bottom of the side menu, to explain the unwelcome demise of the location sharing service.

Google's damage control effort has won the approval of some users, but many fans of Latitude remain dissatisfied. And that's perhaps as it must be: It's difficult for Google or any other software company to simultaneously revise its software and keep all of its customers happy. Some people prefer the tools they've grown accustomed to.

With desktop computers, change can often be avoided by refusing to upgrade, at least until shifting standards and security issues force the issue. But updates become complicated with cloud services and particularly with automatically updated mobile apps, because software users may find their tools revised without the opportunity to review and approve the changes.

There's not much that can be done to limit changes to cloud services beyond complaining and, if necessary, migrating to other services. But with mobile apps, users have to weigh the benefits of automatic updates -- a present option for Android apps available through Google Play and a future option for iOS 7 apps -- against the potential for unanticipated, unwelcomed changes.

Former NFL Player Sues Redskins Over Knee Injury

A former NFL player is suing the Washington Redskins, saying his career-ending knee injury resulted from a bounty program in which the team?s coaches encouraged players to intentionally injure opponents.

Barrett Green played linebacker for the Detroit Lions and New York Giants between 2000 and 2005. He says a career-ending knee injury during a game on Dec. 5, 2004 was the result of an ?unusual, outrageous and an obvious cheap shot.?

The lawsuit also names former Redskins player Robert Royal, the player who hit Green, and former assistant coach Gregg Williams.

Green initially filed his lawsuit in May in state court in Maryland. It has since been removed to federal court in Greenbelt, Md.

The Redskins declined to comment on the case.

All Electric Vehicle Rally ends with Tesla S in top spot

There they were, a caravan of nine electric car enthusiasts with a lot of free time on their hands, "tearing" down North America's west coast in a bunch of environmentally conscious vehicles. That was just last week in what organizer Tony Williams called the All Electric Vehicle Rally, and nearly all nine participants arrived in the rally's end location of Tijuana, Mexico.

The convoy started in Blaine, Washington and took to I-5 in four chunks. This year a Tesla Model S piloted by Jack Bowers and Georg Kuhnke arrived first, with just 41 hours of driving time -- a far cry from the eight days and five hours the course took Williams last year. The approximately 1,400 miles were covered by the winner at an average speed of about 34 MPH. Sadly, one Nissan Leaf owner got stuck charging their car for 15 hours in California due to a lack of CHADEMO chargers en route. Despite years of promises, CHADEMO sites haven't made their way south of the Oregon/California border as part of the west coast's Green Highway. Still, that we've reached the point where even some EVs can clear that many miles in under two days using only public chargers is pretty impressive.

US, China hold annual strategic dialogue

(AP) ? A month after the presidents of the U.S. and China held an unconventional summit at a California resort, their top officials are convening in more staid surroundings in Washington to review security and economic issues that reflect growing ties but also deep-seated differences between the world powers.

The fifth edition of the annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue opening Wednesday takes place in less fraught circumstances than last year's in Beijing, which was overshadowed by the escape of dissident lawyer Chen Guangcheng from house arrest to the U.S. Embassy.

But there's still plenty to argue about. The Cabinet-level officials taking part in the two days of talks at the State Department and Treasury will address the growing U.S. anxiety over cybertheft, the nuclear program of China's ally North Korea and barriers to U.S. trade and investment in China. They will also discuss cooperation on tackling climate change.

Vice President Joe Biden will open the dialogue, and Secretary of State John Kerry ? returning for the occasion from his wife's bedside in Boston after she was hospitalized ? and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew are due to lead the U.S. side, which includes more than a dozen government agency heads. A similarly heavyweight Chinese delegation is led by Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

When President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping met at the Sunnylands resort in June they sought a more collaborative relationship between their countries, whose strategic rivalry belies deep economic interdependence. Xi, who recently took the helm of the one-party state after a once-in-a-decade leadership transition, has long spoken of establishing a new type of relations that would avoid conflict between the established power, America, and the rising power, China.

But translating the grand vision into action, and reconciling the fundamental political differences, isn't easy. The California summit was short on concrete outcomes, and although Xi did express common cause with Obama in his opposition to North Korea's nuclear weapons program, that has yet to translate into effective pressure on Pyongyang.

When the U.S.-China dialogue was first staged, the emphasis was on economy and trade. It has since morphed into a sprawling discussion of bilateral and strategic issues that some have said make the talks unwieldy. Officials will grapple with a wide variety of topics, among them Iran's nuclear program, the civil war in Syria and human rights in China itself.

A longtime Washington concern in its relations with China ? the low value of China's currency and its impact on the skewed trade balance ? has eased as the yuan has appreciated in value against the dollar. These days, the Obama administration is putting most emphasis on cybertheft of intellectual property and trade secrets and says resolving that will be key to the future of the relationship. That was the subject of working-level talks Monday; on Tuesday, civilian and military officials discussed maritime security, missile defense and nuclear policy.

While stressing the cyber issue, Washington has been put on the defensive by the revelations about U.S. surveillance by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, whom the U.S. had wanted extradited from the semiautonomous Chinese territory of Hong Kong before he flew to Russia. Among Snowden's allegations was that the U.S. hacked targets in China, including the nation's cellphone companies and two universities.

Cheng Li, a China expert at the Brookings Institution, said an extradition from Hong Kong would have been deeply unpopular among the Chinese public and could have triggered street protests, and U.S. policymakers likely realize it. He said he did not expect the Snowden case to weigh on this week's dialogue.

There appears little room for compromise on the thorniest security concerns that hamper U.S.-China ties, such as China's attitude toward territorial disputes in the South and East China seas, where its assertive actions have unnerved its neighbors, including U.S. allies. There's more hope of progress in areas such as energy security and climate change, including cooperation on reducing emissions.

On the economic front, U.S. businesses and lawmakers want the Obama administration to push China harder to reduce barriers to American trade and investment, roll back subsidies for Chinese state-owned enterprises and make progress on negotiations for a bilateral investment treaty. For its part, China is concerned about security screening of its companies as they increasingly look to invest in the U.S.

The Center for Strategic International Studies think tank said the Chinese side will have little room to maneuver as the dialogue comes ahead of a meeting in October of the ruling party's central committee, where Xi's economic reform plans will be rolled out. Still, Beijing will likely want to show some incremental progress on Washington's trade and investment concerns, including protection of intellectual property.

Sunlight Foundation's Political Party Time: Season tickets, a presidential roundtable, a Google hangout, and a skeet shoot

Peter Olsen-Phillips

Political fundraisers may serve many purposes, my fellow partiers.

While a politician's chief concern at these soirees is generally stuffing the campaign war chest, parties also provide lawmakers with a chance to announce future campaign plans outside of the harsh glare of journalists' cameras, as Maine Gov. Paul LePage just did, or to show support for their partisan compatriots.

That's what New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his Mayors Against Illegal Guns PAC are up to as the Big Apple independent and the PAC he's underwriting continue to throw political muscle behind supporters of stricter gun control legislation. As reported by Buzzfeed, Bloomberg will play host July 22 to a $1,000-and-up benefit for Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va..

Manchin, seen at right,?has a complicated past with gun laws. The blue dog Democrat received campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association as recently?September 2012, but later clashed with the guns group over his role in spearheading Senate efforts to mandate universal background checks. Tossing in with Bloomberg likely means Manchin will be one of the NRA's chief targets should he run for reelection in 2018.

A New York fundraiser hosted by the billionaire mayor offers beneficiaries a chance to cash in on Bloomberg's Wall Street connects. Party Time records show that past honorees have included former Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., and Sen. Angus King, I-Maine.

Now, on to what's happening this week on the political party scene.

Barrasso's season pass

Perhaps borrowing a page out of the Redskins' marketing strategy, some politicians are wagering that fervent supporters will pony up for a season pass.

At least that's what pols like Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., are hoping.

This Wednesday, Barrasso's Common Values PAC will throw an Italian wine tasting happy hour at the Rowland Tasting Room in Southeast Washington. Suggested contributions range from $100 to $1,000 for individuals and PACs, but for those who hold a "season pass," the event is free!

Such tactics offer politicians a means to get large, lump sum contributions from supporters, instead of relying on repeated requests. On the flip side, holders of a "season pass" get increased access to the recipient via 'free' access to fundraisers and retreats throughout the year.

This year's going rate for season tickets to Barrasso events was $5,000 for PACs and $2,500 for individuals, according to a March 12 invitation. We'll leave it up to you to decide whether it's worth the dough.

Obama Roundtable

When he's not touring South Africa or navigating the intricacies of healthcare reform, our Commander in Chief enjoys many of the same wholesome activities as any other red-blooded American, namely partying (or 'roundtabling' in this case).

Any fundraiser featuring the Leader of the Free World is sure to cost some serious dough. But, if you have an extra $32,400 lying around, you could join President Obama and 24 other lucky participants at an undisclosed location this Thursday for a roundtable discussion benefiting the Democratic National Committee.

Similar events in the past have gone for as much as $60,000-$100,000. So, just think of this as the half-off sale.

Google hangout

The tech industry is not known as a hotbed of conservative support.

Indeed, the leftward leanings of Silicon Valley were supposedly a?contributing factor to the Dems technological edge in the 2012 presidential campaign. That hasn't stopped Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., from throwing a lunch fundraiser this Thursday in Google's Washington office.

Influence Explorer data shows that the tech giant?tends to favor Democrats with its campaign contributions and PAC money. However, a quick search through the PT database reveals the illustrious search engine's Washington headquarters has served as the venue to at least five Republican fundraising events since September of last year.

Google's political action committee, Google NetPAC, has also served as host for at least four events benefiting Republican lawmakers.

If you have any other invitations to political fundraisers by Google, please share with us here (we also accept fundraisers involving Bing, if that's more to your taste).

Stick to your guns

Finally, if you need to blow off a little steam this Friday, grab your 12 gauge and join Idaho Sen. Jim Risch for a morning of skeet shooting and grub at the Prince George's County Trap & Skeet Center in Maryland.

Sen. Risch has the distinction of holding an A+ grade from the National Rifle Association and for $500-$1,000 for an individual attendee or $1,000-$2,500 for a PAC, you can see for yourself how good of a shot he is.

Bucking the stereotype that all such fundraisers are elegant affairs held at upmarket townhouses and glitzy hotels, the Maryland shooting range has been an exceedingly popular spot for such events over the past several years.

That's all for this week, folks. As always, if you come across an invitation to a political fundraiser, share the love and send it this way.

Fitness Equipments Warehouse ? Easy To Use Personal Training ...

Not being motivated is the most common source of failure when it comes to weight loss through fitness training programs. People often think of exercising as an awful chore they have to do, but it really isn?t like that. You can take steps to ensure your workout will be enjoyable and fun. You will be able to come up with an enjoyable exercise regimen if you take the advice provided here to heart.

Music is something you should integrate into all of your workouts. Putting on some tunes often motivates people to get their bodies moving instinctively. When you work out to your favorite tunes, it can feel more like a night on the dance floor than exercise. Moving around in a fun way keeps your mind off the exercise you are doing and allows you to work out a little longer.

TIP! You miss 100% of the shots you don?t take. -Wayne Gretzky

When you exercise with some friends, it makes staying in shape much easier. A great way to avoid focusing on the way your body feels while you work out is to start a conversation with a friend or new acquaintance. Exercising with a friend raises the fun factor, which means you will enjoy your workout more.

Workout video games can be a great investment. By participating in one of these games, you will not feel as though you are working out. You won?t feel tired because you are immersed in the exercise. Since you are playing the game and having fun, you will working out longer than normal.

TIP! I?d rather be a failure at something I enjoy than a success at something I hate. -George Burns

Think about what workout clothes will look good on you and go get them. To motivate you even more for an exercise regimen, you should buy a new outfit that will fit when you reach your goal. Don?t feel like it needs to be bland. You can pick an outfit that?s colorful and stylish but still comfortable for working out. As soon as you don them, your new exercise clothes will inspire you to start exerting yourself.

Be sure you don?t continually do the same exercises because you will get tired of them and may stop exercising altogether. If you become bored with your routine, you are more likely to quit working out. Altering your workout routines so there is plenty of variety will assist you in staying interested and focused. It?s imperative that you keep exercising, because it can be very hard to get going again once you have stopped.

You will be motivated to lose more weight if you reward yourself each time you reach a weight loss goal. The reward doesn?t have to be something really big. It can be something small, such as a small desert or a new pair of shoes. If you are going to give yourself a reward, you should make it something your really going to look forward to getting. It is important to keep yourself motivated to meet your fitness goals.
