Asian stocks quiet amid holidays; Nikkei declines

BANGKOK (AP) ? Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell Monday after a closely watched survey showed confidence in the economy weakening.

The Bank of Japan's "tankan" confidence index was minus 3, a worsening from the previous quarter's minus 1.

The index is a percentage of the companies with a positive outlook versus those who see unfavorable conditions ahead, so a minus number means there are more pessimistic companies than optimistic ones.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose marginally to 4,390.20, with solid gains among big banks and resource shares. Still, trading was light due to a public holiday in parts of the country.

Markets in China, Hong Kong and South Korea were closed for public holidays.

Wall Street stocks fell Friday. Investors remain nervous about Spain, even though the results of stress-tests for the country's most troubled banks contained no surprises. A report in the U.S. showing that high gasoline prices were the only reason that consumer spending rose last month also weighed on market sentiment.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.4 percent to 13,437.13. The S&P 500 index fell 0.5 percent to 1,440.67. The Nasdaq composite index fell 0.7 percent to 3,116.23.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was down 68 cents to $91.51 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 34 cents to finish at $92.19 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2828 from $1.2855 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.91 yen from 77.99 yen.

California Largest Technology Corps Audited Net Income in ... - Yes

From an extensive review of SEC filings, I found 70 Corps
headquartered in California with externally audited under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) After-tax Net Income of at least $500 mil in any of the most recent five fiscal years.

Of these 70 California Corps, 37 of them are Technology Corps.

These 37 Largest California Technology Corps filing with the SEC generated Audited US GAAP Total After-tax Net Income from Continuing Operations of $103 bil in the most recent fiscal year 2011, which was a profit improvement of a massive $80 bil, or up 346%, over the Total After-tax Net Income of $23 bil generated by these same 37 technology companies just three years earlier in 2008, the last year of the Bush/Cheney Administration.

And to illustrate just how widespread this earnings improvement during the Obama Administration is in the California Technology Sector, 34 of these 37 California Largest Technology Corps had 2011 earnings increases from that of three years ago, at the end of the Bush/Cheney Presidential term.

Further, to illustrate how awesomely powerful the total earnings growth was in the California Technology Sector during the Obama Administration, these 37 Largest California Technology Corps had their Audited US GAAP Total After-tax Net Income increase by $30 bil, or by 129%, in 2009 over 2008; by another $28 bil, or by 52% in 2010 over 2009; and by another $23 bil, or by 28%, in 2011 over 2010.? Whew!

So if the question to be answered is whether, in the aggregate, these 37 Largest California Technology Corps are better off now than they were in the last year of the Bush/Cheney Administration, the answer is clearly yes, and by $80 bil better, or by nearly three and a half times better, as earnings performance is measured by the prestigious US Accounting Profession.

And the 33 Largest California Non-Technology Corps filing with the SEC generated Audited US GAAP Total After-tax Net Income from Continuing Operations of $79 bil in the most recent fiscal year 2011, which was a profit improvement of $30 bil, or up a robust 61%, over the Total After-tax Net Income of $49 bil generated by these same 33 Largest California Non-Technology companies just three years earlier in 2008, the last year of the Bush/Cheney Administration.

The two California Big Oil Corps......Chevron and Occidental Petroleum....comprised a massive 64% of the Total Earnings of these 33 Largest California Non-Technology Corps in 2008, the last year of the Bush/Cheney Administration.

But during the most recent three years of the Obama Administration, the California Finance and Other Sectors experienced huge total earnings growth.

The 13 Largest Non-Technology California Corps in the Finance Sector had their Total After-tax Net Income increase from only $4.6 bil in 2008 to $25.8 bil in 2011, an increase of a massive 455%.? The clear leader here was the very well run Wells Fargo, which had its After-tax Earnings increase from only $2.7 bil in 2008 to $16.2 bil in the most recent 2011.

So, clearly it wasn't just the California Technology Sector, but also particularly the California Finance Sector, and even many California Corps in Other Sectors, which have had spectacular total earnings growth during the Obama Administration.?

The only negative here is that this total earnings growth has decelerated, particularly so in 2012.? It's all about the November 2010 Tea Party Election, which must be reversed all over the country in November 2012, in order to re-accelerate this total earnings growth, which is so critically needed to spur the country's present tepid real GDP growth and also needed to spur the presently modest US job creation.

President Obama can't do it alone.? He needs a US Congress that will work with him.? And even blue States like California can help here, not just by voting in more California US Congressional Democrats, but also by contributing to and helping in campaigns all across the country to remove from office the many Uncompromising, Very Conservative Republican members in key US Congressional races like Joe Walsh in Illinois, Michele Bachmann in Minnesota, Allen West in Florida, Steve King in Iowa, and Larry Bucshon in Indiana.....just to name a few.? These Republicans, strongly supported by the Tea Party, have good intentions, but they are severely harming the country's economy.

Below here is the Audited under US GAAP After-tax Net Income or Net Loss for each of these 37 Largest California Technology Corps and 33 Largest California Non-Technology Corps for each of the most recent five fiscal years.? The majority of these 70 California Corporations have a December Fiscal Year End (FYE).

Ghana deports 38 Chinese citizens arrested for alleged illegal gold mining

BEIJING - China says 38 of its citizens have been arrested and deported after being caught allegedly mining gold illegally in the west African country of Ghana.

A statement seen Sunday on the website of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana says 40 Chinese citizens were recently detained in Obuasi district in southern Ghana.

It says investigations by security authorities in Ghana found one person not guilty, while another was released on bail. It says the remaining 38 Chinese were deported because they had no residence or work permit or license to mine. It was unclear whether they had been prosecuted.

The embassy says the 38 were already back in China on Thursday.

Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse

The Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse ($49.99 direct) attempts to fuse fashion and technology and, to a certain extent, succeeds on both levels. It definitely makes a loud, albeit curious, stylistic statement, sporting a sleek, bronze-finished chassis with a circular hole piercing the body. On the "technology" side of the equation, though, that loud statement is reduced to a soft whimper. Its low profile fits awkwardly in the hand, and, for an otherwise ordinary mouse with standard functionality, its $50 price tag is difficult to justify in the face of equally versatile, more affordable mice.

Design and Features
The Ultralife's sleek, low profile body is tastefully minimalist in appearance, though not pared down as dramatically as the Manhattan Stealth Touch Mouse . The left- and right- click buttons are integrated into the handsome bronze-finished chassis, and lends an overall streamlined look to the Ultralife. Aside from the tiny scroll wheel and an etched Targus insignia, the face of the Ultralife is entirely unadorned. A battery indicator life beneath the scroll wheel flashes red whenever the battery levels dip too low, but it's only visible through the thin slit that separates the left- and right- click buttons. The underside, meanwhile, is constructed out of black plastic, and there you'll find a power switch, two glide strips that allow smooth movement on most surfaces, a battery compartment for one AA battery (one is included), and a magnetic strip that attracts the dongle when you take the Ultralife on the go. The magnetic holder is a good idea, at least in theory, though not as practical as a dongle compartment, and, one can easily imagine the dongle becoming dislodged whenever the Ultralife is tossed into a backpack. By far the most curious aspect of the Ultralife's design is the hole on the lower right side of the mouse, which pierces the chassis and exposes the surface beneath the mouse, bringing to mind a pierced earlobe. Maybe the hole represents the emptiness of modern life. Or maybe the Ultralife can be used ironically as a keychain. Either way, it's an interesting piece of flair that ultimately doesn't affect performance and is highly subjective, so make of it what you will.

The Ultralife is compatible with Windows (Windows 7, Vista, and XP). It's also compatible with the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, as I was able to use it on a system with Windows 8 Release Preview installed, and found that the scroll wheel scrolls through tiled interface of the start screen. Unlike the HP Wireless Mouse X4000 , it's also compatible with Mac operating systems.

Performance
Measuring 0.8 by 2.25 by 4 inches (HWD), the Ultralife has a thin profile that matches the ultrabook aesthetic. It's a cool design, but an ergonomically questionable call. My hand had to assume an awkward claw-like position during use, since resting it on the Ultralife resulted in a five-finger drag. That said, the Ultralife deserves props for its ambidextrous design that can accommodate righties and lefties unlike, say, the HP Wi-Fi Touch Mouse X7000 .

The Ultralife connects wirelessly through a dongle that beams out a 2.4GHz signal. Since it's plug-and-play, setting it up simply requires plugging the dongle into a free USB port and waiting for several moments as the drivers are installed. If your system has a limited number of available USB ports, as is often the case with ultrabooks, you may be better off with a mouse that features Bluetooth connectivity, like the Verbatim Easy Riser Bluetooth Notebook Laser Mouse .

Aside from its ergonomic hang-ups, the Ultralife is a decent performer. Its 1200 DPI laser sensor ensures smooth movement, even on higher resolution displays, and the left- and right- clicks as well as the scroll wheel don't feel stiff. Response rate is also on point, and there's no noticeable lag during use.

The Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse is one of the more interesting-looking mice you'll encounter. That's not to say that it's unattractive?it just may not be everyone's cup of tea. Still, its low profile makes for an awkward user experience. That, and its standard functionality, makes it pretty difficult to justify its $50 price tag.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Targus Ultralife Wireless Mouse with several other computer mice side by side.

Well-dressed robbers sought in brazen NYC heist

By Shimon Prokupecz and Ida Siegal, NBCNewYork.com

Police are looking for a pair of armed robbers behind a brazen jewelry store heist in midtown Manhattan.

Two well-dressed armed men?walked into Madison Jewelers at 400 Madison Ave. Friday afternoon and asked to see some watches.

"A gentleman came in, looking at some Rolex watches," store owner Joseph Krady told NBC 4 New York. "When I asked him, 'Which one would you like to take?' he pulled out a gun and said, 'I'm gonna take them all'."

View NBCNewYork.com's full story on heist

The gunman had an accomplice, and the two took all the watches from the window display and some jewelry.?

After Krady did all he was instructed to do, the robbers pepper-sprayed him before fleeing.

"I couldn't see anything," he said. "It was the most painful thing."?

"I always feel very safe in the shop, it's a wide open area," said Krady. "It's busy, there's people around. You don't think anything like this could happen to you."??

Hate-Speech Hypocrites

Pakistani Shiite Muslims shout slogans beside a burning Israeli flag during a rally against Israel and the United States. Pakistani Shiite Muslims shout slogans beside a burning Israeli flag during a rally against Israel and the United States to mark the Al-Quds (Jerusalem) day on the last Friday of the holiest month of Ramadan in Peshawar in August

Photograph by Hasham Ahmed/AFP/Getty Images.

Jews have too much influence over U.S. foreign policy. Gay men are too promiscuous. Muslims commit too much terrorism. Blacks commit too much crime.

Each of those claims is poorly stated. Each, in its clumsy way, addresses a real problem or concern. And each violates laws against hate speech. In much of what we call the free world, for writing that paragraph, I could be jailed.

Libertarians, cultural conservatives, and racists have complained about these laws for years. But now the problem has turned global. Islamic governments, angered by an anti-Muslim video that provoked protests and riots in their countries, are demanding to know why insulting the Prophet Mohammed is free speech but vilifying Jews and denying the Holocaust isn?t. And we don?t have a good answer.

If we?re going to preach freedom of expression around the world, we have to practice it. We have to scrap our hate-speech laws.

Muslim leaders want us to extend these laws. At this week?s meeting of the U.N. General Assembly, they lobbied for tighter censorship. Egypt?s president said freedom of expression shouldn?t include speech that is ?used to incite hatred? or ?directed towards one specific religion.? Pakistan?s president urged the ?international community? to ?criminalize? acts that ?endanger world security by misusing freedom of expression.? Yemen?s president called for ?international legislation? to suppress speech that ?blasphemes the beliefs of nations and defames their figures.? The Arab League?s secretary-general proposed a binding ?international legal framework? to ?criminalize psychological and spiritual harm? caused by expressions that ?insult the beliefs, culture and civilization of others."

President Obama, while condemning the video, met these proposals with a stout defense of free speech. Switzerland?s president agreed: ?Freedom of opinion and of expression are core values guaranteed universally which must be protected.? And when a French magazine published cartoons poking fun at Mohammed, the country?s prime minister insisted that French laws protecting free speech extend to caricatures.

This debate between East and West, between respect and pluralism, isn?t a crisis. It?s a stage of global progress. The Arab spring has freed hundreds of millions of Muslims from the political retardation of dictatorship. They?re taking responsibility for governing themselves and their relations with other countries. They?re debating one another and challenging us. And they should, because we?re hypocrites.

From Pakistan to Iran to Saudi Arabia to Egypt to Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Muslims scoff at our rhetoric about free speech. They point to European laws against questioning the Holocaust. Monday on CNN, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad needled British interviewer Piers Morgan: ?Why in Europe has it been forbidden for anyone to conduct any research about this event? Why are researchers in prison? ? Do you believe in the freedom of thought and ideas, or no?? On Tuesday, Pakistan?s U.N. ambassador, speaking for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, told the U.N. Human Rights Council:

We are all aware of the fact that laws exist in Europe and other countries which impose curbs, for instance, on anti-Semitic speech, Holocaust denial, or racial slurs. We need to acknowledge, once and for all, that Islamophobia in particular and discrimination on the basis of religion and belief are contemporary forms of racism and must be dealt with as such. Not to do so would be a clear example of double standards. Islamophobia has to be treated in law and practice equal to the treatment given to anti-Semitism.

He?s right. Laws throughout Europe forbid any expression that ?minimizes,? ?trivializes,? ?belittles,? ?plays down,? ?contests,? or ?puts in doubt? Nazi crimes. Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic extend this prohibition to communist atrocities. These laws carry jail sentences of up to five years. Germany adds two years for anyone who ?disparages the memory of a deceased person.?
