If you get on holiday to Cyprus any time soon, you won?t be disappointed in the food. It?s worth knowing that there are lots of familiar favourites, due to the fact that this was a British Island up until half a century ago, and has a lot of British settlers too. But the thing to get really excited about is the native food and drink. It?s cheap, delicious, and unique, so it can really make your holiday something special.

The island itself has gone through many changes over the centuries, and it?s been influenced by different cultures too. Most recently, the Brits left the island to its own governance in 1960, but before that it?s been in the hand of the Greeks and the Turkish. So you?re going to find lots of flavours and styles in the cuisine of this varied land, and some familiar favourites too.

A great thing to start your Cypriot culinary journey is Meze. Like Spanish Tapas, this consists of an array of small dishes, which perfectly introduce you to the tastes on offer. They sometimes come free with drinks in food bars, but you can also order yourself a grand platter to really get you into the spirit of indulgence. The dishes themselves are mostly fish and meat based, with rich tomato sauce meatballs, grilled sardines, and grilled cheese dishes as some of the examples. The format of the food encourages a more laid back way of eating, taking your time, drinking, and enjoying conversation as you partake.

For more substantial main meals, you?ll find a lot of delicious, salty fish stews around the coast. Inland you get more varied foods. Koupepia shows the cultural heritage of North Africa in its influences. It?s a dish of meat and rice wrapped in grape leaves, and is completely delicious. Afelia and Sheftalia are both usually pork-based dishes, with wine and spices to add to their taste.

But that?s still not all of the treats on offer here. You can also take part in the wonderful local drinks. These include the highly regarded beer called KAO, which is exported throughout the Mediterranean but has its home in Cyprus, and the sweet wines such as Commandaria.
