Around here at Retro Game Network, we really like hearing about new independent video game stores that sell the classics. Why is that? Because sometimes, instead of wanting to spend hours on online sites like eBay, it?s a nice change to actually drive to a store and browse a selection, and instantly take your merchandise home with you. (You know, back like it was in the days when you?d save your allowance to get a new game!) Earlier last week, a brand new brick and mortar store devoted to the classics, called ?1 UP Games?, opened up in Yakima in the state of Washington, and we have some details for you.
The store?s owner is 22 year old Alex Smith. Alex has been an online retailer and trader of classic video games for several years. He states that the new store is a place where people would be able to stop in and either sell their classic video games, or buy them for their own collection at a fair price. About a month ago, he began posting some advance notices about the store?s grand opening on Craigslist. Like many young business owners, while being a complete labor of love, Smith hopes that the new store will be successful:
?People love classic video games, and it?s just one of those things because a lot of times it brings people to their childhood. I still enjoy playing original Mario Brothers, playing Paperboy every once in a while. It?s just fun because just like watching Saturday morning cartoons, you remember what you did as a kid and how it was fun.?
He also talked about some of the games values at the store:
?Two dollars, seven dollars. There?s plain old ones and then there?s more rare titles. People are always shocked that some of the games have gone up in price and value.?
Alex first had a store in the Richland area of Washington, but decided to relocate the store to Yakima last year. Currently, ?1 UP Games? is the only store in the area selling classic games. However to cater to those that are more into modern gaming, he also sells games for current systems such as the Xbox 360 and PS3.
?1 UP Games? is located within the Blue Ribbon Plaza, which is located at 2807 West Washington Avenue, in Yakima. They are open Tuesday through Saturday, between Noon and 6pm, and can be reached at (509) 396-4603.
