Since health care is a major expense, tools for consumers to monitor their own health are in demand. One such device is the iSpO2, a pulse oximeter for consumer use, from the Masimo Corporation. It measures how much oxygen is in the blood, the heart rate and perfusion index (how much blood is circulating to the extremities).
Presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2013, the noninvasive iSpO2 slips onto your ring finger. Using the same technology as hospitals, it provides the readings through a connection to the iOS platform with its cable and sensor.
Some people who could benefit from the information provided are those who exercise frequently or spend time at high altitudes. They want to avoid hypoxia, a condition in which the blood lacks enough oxygen.
?iSpO2 owes its origins to 24 years of medical-device innovation,? Mike Drummond, Masimo editorial media manager, informed RESCUECOM. Masimo, founded in 1989 by Joe Kiani, is located in Irvine, California. Its first product, intended for hospitals, was a new type of pulse oximeter.
Before this, it was difficult to measure blood oxygen if patients moved or had low blood flow, according to the company. But this new technology using multiple wavelengths of light had trouble breaking into the market.
Masimo?s dramatic early years included testifying at United States Senate hearings about its struggle with price-fixing purchasing organizations that prevented sales of its products, plus regaining the rights to its stolen technology. Masimo overcame these obstacles and created more products.
Drummond continued, ?iSpO2 uses the same technology found in Masimo?s breakthrough line of pulse oximeters and Pulse CO-Oximeters ? the standard-of-care pulse oximetry technology at work in leading hospitals around the world ? providing accurate measurements, even during the challenging conditions of motion and low perfusion.?
Check your iPad screen for the results of your iSpO2 reading. If you have trouble with the iPad, contact a reliable computer repair company, such as RESCUECOM, for iPad support.
The iSpO2 app stores your data history, which you can transfer to a computer spreadsheet.
If you should ever lose the data history stored on your computer, remember that computer professionals, such as RESCUECOM, are ready at any time to offer you data recovery options.
Other Masimo products include noninvasive tools and sensors to measure various blood properties and vital signs.
?Our business model is quite simple,? Drummond stated, ?out-innovate the competition, and take our technology to new sites and applications. . .such as Apple devices. iSpO2 is our first consumer product. . .but it won?t be our last.?
Before active athletes or pilots rely on the iSpO2 tool, they should make sure they learn what blood oxygen levels are dangerously low for them and also inform their companions to be on the alert in case of a medical emergency.
