Bio: Born in San Jose, Calif. U.S. figure skater Peggy Fleming won the first of five consecutive U.S. women?s championships when she was 15. She finished first in the world championship three consecutive years and was the only U.S. athlete to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble, France. One of skating?s first bona-fide celebrities, Fleming is credited with luring legions of youth to the sport and for making figure skating a staple of sports broad casting on network television.
Fleming comes from a family with a long history of heart disease and discovered herself that she suffered with high cholesterol in the mid 90s and has been involved in several health initiatives to educate folks about the issue.
