How successfully a child who receives homeschooling becomes well socialized will depend on several factors. Parents can help to make sure this turns out well by making sure their children?s lives are well rounded. What?s crucial is that parents don?t ignore this part of a child?s development and only focus on academics.

Some children are more introverted and may seem to have little need for a full social life, but this is deceptive. A child with this kind of personality may need some encouragement to mix with others, or he or she may never develop in this area. The problem with much of the socialization process that occurs in schools is that quite a bit of it is harmful. Institutionalized education can leave students with many scars by the time they?re done with it. The kind of emotional problems this process causes can last for a lifetime. Considering this, the notion that a typical education is essential for a child?s development seems less than convincing. The greatest benefit of homeschooling is it allows a child to fully blossom in a safe environment. This encourages them to grow up in a manner that fosters their sense of self worth.

Socializing with peers of the same age does have unhealthy aspects like distorting personal expression. Think about what happens in most public schools and this can?t be doubted. Children generally want to be accepted and popular. One of the primary ways they do that is to try to fit in with their peers. The tendency is to gravitate toward others and to form small groups, also called cliques. This behavior may be understandable, but it often costs the kids their personal identity and expression.

This topic between socialization and homeschooling has been debated for a long time and will continue to be. Like all other issues, both sides of relevant points. The most important point is for each individual homeschooling parent to ensure their children have healthy social outlets. This will not prove to be difficult unless the family is living in a remote area.
