PlayStation 2 reaches retirement age, is discontinued in Japan

Sony's PlayStation 3 has been on the market so long you'd think that production of the relatively ancient PS2 stopped some time ago. Well, that wasn't true, but according to the Japanese PlayStation website, the PS2 has now officially been discontinued in the region. Japanese site Famitsu adds that shipments of the console have ended, so once the remaining stock has been depleted in Japan, there'll be no replenishment. It's a sad thought, but let's remember the good times -- the PS2's various iterations have been entertaining gamers for 12 years, and with over 150 million units purchased worldwide it's become the best selling console in history. We're not sure if the PS2 is still shipping to other regions, but its retirement in Japan is probably the beginning of the end globally, so we'd recommend you pick one up now if you intend to explore that extensive back catalogue one day. The PS2 era may be drawing to a close, but its legacy will live on and it can now rub controllers with the other greats in console heaven -- we still miss you, Dreamcast.

After nearly a year circling the moon,?NASA's?Ebb and Flow will meet their demise when they crash ? on purpose ? into the lunar surface.

Just don't expect to see celestial fireworks. Next week's impact near the moon's north pole by the washing machine-sized spacecraft won't carve a gaping crater or kick up a lot of debris. And it'll be dark when it happens.

"We are not expecting a big flash or a big explosion" that will be visible from Earth, said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Still, it'll mark a violent end to a successful mission that has produced the most high-resolution gravity maps of Earth's closest neighbor. On Friday, engineers will turn off the science instruments in preparation for Monday's finale.

Previous unmanned trips to the moon have studied its lumpy gravitational field, but Ebb and Flow are the first ones dedicated to this goal. Since entering orbit over New Year's weekend, the formation-flying spacecraft have peered past the craggy surface into the interior.

Initially, the spacecraft flew about 35 miles (56 kilometers) above the surface and later dropped down to 14 miles (22 kilometers). About an hour before Monday's impact, they will fire their engines until they run out of fuel and slam at 3,800 mph (6,115 kph) into a predetermined target ? a mountain near the north pole that's far away from the Apollo landing sites.

Ebb will hit first followed by Flow 20 seconds later. Though the drama won't be visible from Earth, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will fly over the crash site afterward and attempt to spot them.

The last time?NASA?aimed at the moon was in 2009. The world watched through telescopes and over the Internet as a spacecraft and its booster rocket smashed into a permanently shadowed crater ? a one-two punch that fizzled when spectators saw little more than a fuzzy white flash.

The mission's end will also mark the close of a student campaign that used cameras aboard the spacecraft to image lunar targets including on the moon's far side. The MoonKAM project was spearheaded by a science education company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in July at age 61.

Even after Ebb and Flow complete their mission, scientists will continue to pore over the bounty of data they collected.

Among their findings so far: The moon is more beat up than previously imagined. The crust is much thinner than thought. And there's no evidence that Earth once had two moons that collided to form the one we see in the night sky.

In Boost to U.S. Plans, BBC World News Is Added to Time Warner ...

9:16 a.m. | Updated In a sign of progress for its push to get on cable and satellite systems across the United States, the BBC World News channel is now available in about 10 million homes that subscribe to Time Warner Cable.

The rollout in Time Warner Cable markets was announced this month and was completed Thursday, according to representatives of the BBC and the cable company.

Last year, the BBC began aggressively to seek American distribution for its international news channel, which it says is available full time in more than 200 million homes worldwide. Relatively few were in the United States, however, at least until Comcast signed up late last year, increasing the channel?s reach to about 15 million.

Now, with the Time Warner Cable carriage deal, the channel is up to about 25 million homes, including much of New York City (where advertisers and reporters congregate) on channel 156, and Los Angeles.

?There is still some way to go before we can say we have reached everyone ? but 2012 has been a year of significant breakthroughs for us in the U.S.,? the news organization noted earlier this month.

About 100 million homes in the United States have cable or satellite subscriptions. The deals with Comcast and Time Warner Cable are crucial because they are the two biggest cable providers in the country, and where they lead, others tend to follow. But it?s an uphill climb, nonetheless, since providers are generally reluctant to add new channels to their lineups. One of the BBC?s competitors, Al Jazeera English, has been on a similar campaign for cable carriage in the United States, with less to show for it.

In the United States, BBC World News seems to be positioning itself as an alternative to Fox News, MSNBC and CNN. ?We are really pleased by the growing demand in the U.S. for a global news network which is both nonpartisan and nonsensational in approach,? Jim Egan, the chief operating officer of the BBC unit that is distributing the channel worldwide, said in a statement when the Time Warner Cable deal was announced.

Mr. Egan added: ?BBC World News is about serious news; with on-the-ground reporting and analysis from different parts of the world and a mandate to inform and provide a balanced view. We know that audiences around the world value the channel?s distinctive worldview and we are pleased that more United States viewers now have access to it.?

Sales of Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are far short of expectations. Fisker and other electric-car makers are in trouble. Will the lack of consumer sales kill the electric car, just as it did in the '90s?

The 2006 documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car" explores GM's attempts to bring an electric car to market in the mid-1990s. The usual suspects are trotted out ? the oil industry, the automakers, and the government ? and for years many electric car enthusiasts have believed that it was anything but the consumer that killed the electric car.?

Fast forward to 2012 and it appears that the electric car industry is again struggling to survive. Sales of the Chevy Volt have fallen far short of expectations, and Nissan Motors CEO Carlos Ghosn?has now admitted?they will not meet 2012 sales targets for the Nissan Leaf.

In a recent report, Katie Fehrenbacher noted "A123 Systems, Fisker Automotive and Better Place ? representing billions of dollars of investment in the future of electric cars ? are now facing major problems financially and commercially."

The problem is simply that consumers are not flocking to electric cars as fast as expected. The reasons are primarily the higher initial cost of the car, and certainly some concerns about the range and the possibility of becoming stranded by the car. Early reports from??stranded Nissan Leaf owners?stoked those fears. Even though "Who Killed the Electric Car" completely exonerated batterymakers in the death of the electric car, today's batteries still do not have enough range to satisfy many consumers.?

On the other hand, it is true that when hybrids were first mass-produced in the late 1990s, for several years the market was dominated by the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. At that time oil prices were low, and sales in the early years were very slow. Today, hybrids are very much mainstream, primarily because high oil prices have made them better choices for more consumers.?

If oil prices remain high over the next few years, the electric car may eventually gain some traction ? if consumers don't kill it again first.

New insight into cell development and cancer

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Long-standing research efforts have been focused on understanding how stem cells, cells capable of transforming into any type of cell in the body, are capable of being programmed down a defined path to contribute to the development of a specific organ like a heart, lung, or kidney. Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine has shed new light on how epigenetic signals may function together to determine the ultimate fate of a stem cell.

The study, published December 27, 2012 by the journal Molecular Cell, implicates a unique class of proteins called polycomb-like proteins, or PCL's, as bridging molecules between the "on" and "off" state of a gene. While all of these specialized types of cells share the same genetic information encoded in our DNA, it is becoming increasingly clear that information outside the genome, referred to as epigenetics, plays a central role in orchestrating the reprogramming of a stem cell down a defined path.

Although it is understood that epigenetics is responsible for turning genes "on" and "off" at defined times during cellular development, the precise mechanisms controlling this delicate process are less well understood.

"This finding has important implications for both stem cell biology and cancer development, as the same regulatory circuits controlled by PCL's in stem cells are often misregulated in tumors," said Dr. Greg Wang, senior author of the study and Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The study, led by postdoctoral research fellows Drs. Ling Cai and Rui Lu in the Wang lab, and Dr. Scott Rothbart, a Lineberger postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Brian Strahl, Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, identified that PCL's interact with an epigenetic signal associated with genes that are turned on to recruit a group of proteins called the PRC2 complex which then turn genes off.

"In stem cells, the PRC2 complex turns genes off that would otherwise promote reprogramming into specialized cells of organs like the heart or lungs," said Wang.

In addition to its fundamental role in cellular development, elevated levels of PRC2 have been found in cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, and blood, and pharmaceutical companies are already developing drugs to target PRC2. Wang and colleagues determined that the same mechanisms controlling PRC2 function in stem cells also applies in human cancers.

"The identification of a specific PCL in controlling PRC2 in cancer cells suggests we may be able to develop drugs targeting this PCL to regulate PRC2 function in a more controlled manner that may maintain PRC2 function in stem cells while inhibiting it in the tumor," said Wang.

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health grants (GM085394 and GM068088), the Department of Defense, the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and the University Cancer Research Fund, and was performed in collaboration with scientists at the University of California at Riverside, Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Study co-authors from UNC also included Bowen Xu, a student in the Wang Lab, and Ashutosh Tripathy, a Research Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Private company to offer rides to moon by 2020

Golden Spike says it hopes to sell missions to the moon for over $1 billion.

The company, called Golden Spike (after the final spike built into the First Transcontinental Railroad), plans to sell each moon mission for about $1.5 billion ? a relative bargain, said the company's president and CEO Alan Stern, a former director of NASA?s Science Mission Directorate.

For the same price as many unmanned robotic missions, Golden Spike will provide a round trip for two humans to the moon.

"We're selling to nations, corporations and individuals," Stern told SPACE.com. "Get in line ? and I think it's going to be a long one." [How Golden Spike's Moon Landing Plan Works (Infographic )]

Stern and Golden Spike's chairman of the board of directors, Gerry Griffin, a former Apollo flight director and NASA Johnson Space Center director, announced their plans today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Shopping for a rocket

The company's leaders have not yet chosen a launch vehicle or space capsule to transport their passengers; Stern expects to make the final selections in 2014.

To keep costs low, Golden Spike will likely use existing or already-under-development rockets and spacecraft. However, the company will need to commission its own lunar lander and specially designed spacesuits. Stern called rumors that Golden Spike had already chosen SpaceX's Falcon 9 Heavy rocket "not true."

The company has been in the works, and under wraps, for two and a half years, Stern said.

"I don?t think anybody's got us beat," he added. "This is state-of-the-art cool."

The missions are being targeted at countries without their own space agencies or that can't afford to launch people to the moon independently, as well as scientific organizations and even private individuals looking to take the trip of a lifetime.

"We have spoken to space agencies from both Asian and European countries and found real interest," Stern said.
