Obama Shows Weakness in Super PAC Stance Change (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama is changing his stance on super PACs and is going to urge his supporters to fund the Democrat-run Priorities USA, according to ABC News. As someone who has studied politics for many years, I see this as a missed opportunity for the president and a negative point against his character. He could have taken the high road but has decided to be no better than anyone else.

President Obama could have stuck to his guns and urged his supporters to keep their money out of the super PACs, including Priorities USA. Granted, the negative ads by the Republican-supportive super PACs would pile up, but he could become more of a babe of the media. He could run commercials about how he did not support the new type of campaign advertising and point out how bad the new type of advertising had gotten under the Republicans.

Even if President Obama had spoken against his supporters donating to groups like Priorities USA, people would have still sent money. At least he could have pointed out how he tried. With the overwhelming amount of negative ads against him from the Republican super PACs it would not be hard to notice how more money was being spent to get him out of office than spent to keep him in. His arguments against the campaign fundraising tool could have been apparent and remembered every time we turned on the TV.

He could have stood proud at the debates when questions were asked about campaign ads and super PACs. President Obama could point out the tens of millions his opponent was routing through the Republican super PACs and flooding our TVs with commercials. He could have labeled it as a propaganda campaign which was ruining American politics. Instead, he had given in and decided to be on level ground monetarily with his opponents instead of being on an ethical higher ground.

If we read into this move, it is easy to say President Obama will take a stand until it has negative implications against his presidency. It makes a statement of how his campaign ethics are wavy at best. Instead of leading by example, as a president should, he is giving into the ideal of super PACs because it is the easier way to go about things. Is he really showing qualities of the leader of the free world?
