Entrepreneurs - Do You Lie on Labor Day? | Business Consulting ...

Labor Day was a ploy

While Labor Day has been a national holiday in the United States since 1894, it seems to have changed the focus of it?s original intention.

A big concession

Initially, a concession to the labor movement, legislation was rushed through Congress at the end of the Pullman Strike. Having been a holiday in 30 states starting in 1882, it became a federal holiday mostly to appease the unions.? President Grover Cleveland wanted to take the attention away from the fact that workers died at the hands of the US military and Federal Marshals.

Now, it?s a day of fun

Many people now view Labor Day as an opportunity to enjoy, what for many of us is, the end of summer. Gone are the warm nights and hot days. In Minnesota, we?re now thinking of snow blowers and battening down the hatches. A day of picnics, barbecues and the last day of the MN State Fair. It is definitely a day of celebration.

An idea we love

How many of us entrepreneurs are really that far removed from our work? Unlike the employee, who is carefree enough to enjoy the festivities, as business owners, we?re never really away from our work.

But aren?t so great at the execution

While we love the ?idea? of taking the day off, those words have a completely different meaning to us. ?Taking the day off? means that we are able to focus on our business instead of our customer?s needs. It means that we are able to get many of the things on our desks done. For some of us, it might even mean tackling a new project.

We find ourselves lying, sneaking and stealing

But, I suspect that for some of us it means sneaking away to our computers while the kids are getting ready, the grill is heating or everyone?s getting in the car. Lying by saying ?No, I?m not working.? Stealing those minutes by hiding in our offices, promising ourselves we?ll do ?just this one more thing.?

Guilty but powerless

We feel a bit guilty as we log on. However, a thought just came to us that we wanted to record, an idea that solves a problem that we?ve been pondering or an email that we forgot to send, all draw us back to work like a giant magnet.

And you thought no one knew

You might be asking yourself how do I know this? Well, admittedly, I am working. I have tons of stuff to get off my plate. So here I sit, controlling two computers simultaneously. I?m receiving a flood of short, crisp emails from clients.

You?re sly but I know what?s going on

Just to let you know, I can tell when emails are sent on the sly and when they?re not. And the ones that are coming in definitely are hurried little notes!

My advice

My advice comes to you as an entrepreneur, a consultant and as a friend. Take the day to enjoy your time with your family, friends and nature. Don?t worry about the business, today. Take the day off.

A method to my madness

Some of you might think I?ve gone crazy or are wondering how has taken control of my computer. Many can?t believe I?m saying this but there is a method to my madness.

The absolute truth

The truth is that we get the BEST ideas when we are relaxed. Often that is when the million dollar appears to us. So relax, enjoy and don?t think about work on Labor Day.

And the invitation

With that said, call me with any great ideas you might have and we?ll get working on them tomorrow.
