?Germany-based retailer Aldi, whose flagship retail brand has been expanding across the U.S. at a frenetic pace, is reported to be eyeing entry into California. The discount chain?which stocks mostly private-label brands, including beer and wines like Winking Owl, Landshut and Burlwood that sell for $5 or $6 a bottle?is said to be planning a California distribution center from which to mount its expansion on the West Coast. Aldi, which has over 1,200 U.S. locations and has been expanding by about 80 stores a year, has its U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, outside Chicago. Aldi division Aldi Nord also owns California-based Trader Joe?s. The Aldi brand itself is owned in the U.S. by sister company Aldi S?d. Its entry into California would further heighten retail competition in a market already tightly contested between other chains like Albertsons, Safeway and Fresh & Easy.

?Research specialist Technomic?s Beverage Consumer Trend Report says that 71% of consumers now purchase beverages in the on-premise at least twice a week, up from 66% in 2010. Technomic also reports that specialty drinks, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, have potential for further on-premise growth, especially among younger consumers. Some 47% of consumers between the ages of 18 and 24 responded that they would like to try unique beverage options at restaurants, compared to 29% of overall consumers. In a separate study called ?2012 Beer Trends in Adult Beverage,? Beer sales declined by 1.3% in 2011, driven by a 2.6% volume decline in domestic light beer and a 3.2% volume decline in domestic regular beer. However, Technomic found that volume for craft beer, cider and flavored malt beverages grew by 11.2%, 31.3% and 3.3%, respectively, in 2011. Another on-premise research firm, The NPD Group, also recently reported that beverage-only sales are on the rise in restaurants, as consumers ordering both food and beverage declined by 2% in the 12 months ended June 2012.
