What is your book about?
?The Expert?s Edge? describes in detail how any business or professional can become a true leader in their field of expertise, separating themselves from their nearest competition.
What inspired you to write your book?
I have been helping companies and individuals transform themselves into thoughtleaders for many years but had never put my ?5 pillars of a thoughtleading strategy? in a cohesive WRITTEN body of knowledge. McGraw-Hill saw the value of this and offered to publish it as a hardcover book and a Kindle version.
How did you come to do what you?re doing today?
I had been spending time with management consultants who were always expressing the wish to position themselves as thoughtleaders via publishing articles and/or a book. I realized that, having at one time been a freelance writer, I could help them because they didn?t know where to begin. But it wasn?t the writing itself that they were stuck on, but instead what to do with an article or book AFTER it was written. I knew how to carry out this implementation phase.
Can you describe a typical day in your life?
I spend a lot of time with my staff pitching article ideas for our ?client thoughtleaders? and editing articles in advance of submission. I also pitch book ideas on behalf of our clients to major publishers. I practice thoughtleading myself too by publishing articles, working on books of my own, speaking to groups, responding to media interviews. EVERYONE should practice thoughtleading if they want to maintain a successful business, so even those on my staff write articles for publication so that we are viewed as thoughtleaders as a firm.
What do you most enjoy about what you do?
I love the world of publishing, I enjoy writing (and seeing my name in print!), I enjoy public speaking, I?m fascinated by how the media works. I also like it when I see others getting their ideas out in print or by public speaking when I know they wouldn?t have done so, and in fact wouldn?t have known HOW to do so, without our help.
Are there any people and/or books that have inspired you along your journey?
For business success, there?s no one better than Alan Weiss, author of ?Million Dollars Consulting? and ?Money Talks? and many other books. There are also clients of mine who keep evolving into ever-greater business thoughtleaders like Suzanne Bates and Andre de Waal, and in the political-economic realm Tom Friedman and Paul Krugman. I describe the impressive rags-to-riches story of thoughtleader author Suze Orman in my own book? amazing personal triumph!
Can you share some business tips for our readers?
My 5 pillars say it all:
1. ? ? Publish your ideas!
2. ? ? Speak to groups
3. ? ? Keep ?refreshing? your thinking
4. ? ? Creatively leverage the Internet
5. ? ? Vigorously respond to the media
Can you share something that people might be surprised to learn about you?
I?ve seen Paul McCartney perform twice, Ringo perform twice, George Harrison once. Never saw my favorite John Lennon at all, but no worries? his three mates did not disappoint!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Everyone can be a thoughtleader! Just follow my 5 pillars and keep at it.
