Washington tops list of most shopaholic cities

By Marisa Taylor

Washington may not be the first place that comes to mind when conjuring up the best-dressed cities in the United States ? style centers like Los Angeles and New York are more likely to top that particular list.

But despite the capital city?s reputation as a hub for frumpy government workers who prioritize legislation over their looks, the District of Columbia is the most shopaholic city in the country, according to some number-crunching by financial site Bundle.com.

Bundle determined the 10 most shopaholic cities in the U.S. by using a combination of U.S. Census data, anonymous and aggregated spending transactions from Citigroup, and information from third party data providers. It tracked spending data on clothes, shoes and other items from March 2010 to March 2011 and calculated average monthly spending among the 100 most populous American cities.

The cities where consumers are dropping the most cash may come as a surprise. After all, Washington,?that veritable sea of unflattering pantsuits and khakis, came out on top, with its residents spending a monthly average of $265 on clothes, shoes, and ?other wear.? In second place is nearby Arlington, Va., whose denizens shell out $254.58 on clothes and shoes in a given month. Close behind is Nashville, Tenn., where residents spend an average of $251.17 on clothing and (blue suede?) shoes.

Here is the list in total, which is dominated by populous and affluent cities in the Southern and Western U.S., with the notable absence of New York City and Los Angeles. The exception, perhaps, is Bakersfield, Calif., which ranked at?No. 10.?Residents there spend a monthly average of $201.50, perhaps because of all that oil money. Bakersfield is the seat for Kern County, which produces 76 percent of California's oil.
