If you believe TV and Hollywood, you can?t walk down a street in the U.S. without getting shot or mugged. But in reality, it?s not like that. People live together respecting each other and practising the golden rule. This works in all countries ? even in third world countries. Everywhere you go, 99.999% of activity is ?civilized? ? people are not usually violent towards others, they are not even rude. It also does not depend on their religion or lack of it. Religious beliefs have no connection with most behaviour ? it only affects some dress codes and behaviour around Churches/Mosques etc. Bottom line: religion is not needed to enforce acceptable behaviour towards others.
To listen to some preachers, without God, we would be totally unable to operate a society; according to them, God sets the rules. If you get into a conversation with a rational Christian, they will talk about how, in some unexplained fashion, God has created the culture that we have so that these rules are second nature to us. In effect, He created us so that we know his rules. Well maybe they are not His rules? Maybe we developed the rules of society ourselves as part of our evolution as a society? Then someone wrote down some of them in a holy book and they are now ?God?s rules? - sorry, ?Commandments?.
I have a basic view that most people are good, moral and wanting to live peacefully with others. We know that not everyone is like that ? but most are, or society would not work. But society does work. In fact all societies with a wide range of religions work. Doesn?t that say that the rules for society are independent of religion?
