Sony nixes idea of online-only console - PS3 Games

Gamers would have experienced an online-only PlayStation console from Sony if the company hadn't pulled the plug on development, according to the Wall Street Journal.

(Credit: Microsoft/Sony)

Sony decided against a download-only plan for its next gaming console, and opted to include the traditional optical disk drive, according to the WSJ, which cited unnamed sources.

Online services that allow console users to download games, television shows and music without the need for disks or cartridges are gaining popularity with consumers. The Xbox 360 has evolved beyond a gaming machine and into a media hub.

But the console industry is slow to completely eschew the physical disk, which has long been part of the video-game business. In addition, downloading many of the high-end games requires quick internet connections, and a lot of time and bandwidth, a sensitive issue with internet service providers looking to implement data caps. For Sony, the dilemma is heightened by its investment in Blu-ray discs, which are useless if gamers can download games.

The WSJ's other unnamed sources said that Microsoft is also hesitant to move into online-only gaming, and plans to include an optical disk drive in its next Xbox 360 console.

It will be interesting to see whether anything rolls out at next week's E3 video-game conference. Although companies have said that consoles, save Nintendo's Wii U, are not the focus of E3 this time, the WSJ said that it expects consoles to make an appearance.

Verizon doubles FiOS speeds to 300Mbps, thumb-twiddling waits are officially over

Image

Verizon's IP network traffic jam apparently wasn't that much of an issue, since it just kicked up the speeds for FiOS service by a notch... or ten. Unless you're a spendthrift sticking to the base 15Mbps plan, download speeds have more than doubled across the board -- including to an eye-watering 300Mbps if you opt for the costliest plan. Upload speeds aren't advancing quite so quickly, although those who spring for the two highest tiers will see their upload speeds crack 65Mbps. The fiber speed-up is being attributed to a flood of Internet video and cloud backups, both of which get downright reasonable at 300Mbps; Verizon figures that both a 2-hour HD movie download and a 10GB backup will finish in 22 minutes or less. Whether or not pricing will have changed will have to wait until the speed upgrades take effect in June. Somehow, we can't imagine a drop anytime soon in the $200 monthly outlay for the top tier.

Buick SUV sets record - KansasCity.com

By ANN M. JOB

For The Associated Press

It may be hard to believe, but Buick sold more sport utility vehicles last year than it did Regal, LaCross or Lucerne sedans.

All the SUVs were Enclaves - a high-riding, upscale family vehicle with seating for at least seven, a quiet interior, pleasant ride and decent power.Notably, even third-row seats in the roomy Enclave can be used by adults, and there's relatively easy access to the third row, thanks to a quick-lever release that gets second-row seats out of the way.The Enclave also earned a top, five-star overall crash test rating from the federal government after posting a five-star rating in side crash protection and four out of five stars in frontal crash protection.Pricing is up there, even for a base Enclave. But prices can still be less than those of some competitors. Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price is $37,175 for a base, 2012 Enclave with front-wheel drive. The lowest starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a 2012 Enclave with all-wheel drive is $39,175.All Enclaves have the same 288-horsepower, direct injection V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission.Fuel economy ratings, which top out at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway in a front-wheel drive model, are comparable with other crossover SUVs. But other SUVs can have more power than the Enclave. For example, the 2012 Acura MDX, which has a starting retail price of $43,925, comes with a 300-horsepower V-6, six-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive and is rated by the federal government at 16/21 mpg. Tthe 2012 Lincoln MKT, which starts at $46,160 for a front-wheel drive model, comes with a 303-horsepower V-6 and six-speed automatic and has the same 17/24-mpg rating as the Enclave. At nearly 17 feet long, the Enclave is among the larger crossover SUVs. Bumper to bumper, it's just an inch shy of a Cadillac Escalade with regular wheelbase.Unlike the Escalade, though, the Enclave rides on a car-based platform. While riding higher above the pavement than a regular car does, passengers ride a bit lower than in the Escalade. So, while passengers and driver have good views out the front and sides of the Escalade, they don't have a huge climb up to get inside. The Enclave's exterior styling makes it seem smaller than it is, and proportions are good.Adding to the appealing looks are 19- and 20-inch wheels and tires from the factory, some with chrome cladding. But the Enclave grille and headlights seems a bit dated these days, when light-emitting diode accent lights and fewer round-nosed grilles are becoming the norm.Frankly, the biggest complaint about the styling is how little the driver can see of what's behind the Enclave while backing up. Pillars at the sides of the rear window are sizable, and and liftgate metal comes up to meet the rear-window glass. This made reliance on the test vehicle's rearview camera imperative. The Enclave's 3.6-liter, dual overhead cam V-6 benefits from direct fuel injection, and the Enclave feels lively in city traffic and on flat two-lane roads.Power can come on strongly and torque peaks at 270 foot-pounds at 3,400 rpm, which provides acceptable mid-range performance and gets the 2-ton Enclave up and moving well. But with several passengers riding in higher altitudes and up-and-down hills, this engine can feel tapped.By comparison, the MDX V-6 delivers 270 foot-pounds at a 4,500 rpm. But the MDX, with standard all-wheel drive, weighs 230 pounds less than the hefty, 4,780-pound, base Enclave with front-wheel drive. And Lincoln's MKT has an uplevel engine that's a turbo, providing 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm.The Enclave's strong, confident engine sounds were a nice surprise for a Buick.Fuel economy, though, barely made it to 18 mpg in combined city/highway travel. The 18 mpg is equal to the combined mileage reported by the federal government for an all-wheel drive Enclave, and translated into 395 miles on an $85-plus fillup of the 22-gallon gas tank. The ride in the test Enclave was impressively quiet. There was a lightness to the steering but it was responsive, too. The weighty Enclave rode with some obvious heft, and passengers felt the vehicle weight transfer from side to side during curves.Front seats were wide and comfortable. Second-row seats were adjustable captain chairs that could move forward on tracks to help adjust legroom between second- and third-row passengers. Third-row passengers sit across a cushioned bench that rests closer to the floor than the first two rows, but there's still good headroom back there of 37.8 inches, down a bit from the 40.4 inches in the front seat.Cargo capacity is a whopping 115.9 cubic feet when second and third rows are folded down. With all the seats holding passengers, the back of the Enclave still offers 24.1 cubic feet of cargo room, more than most sedans. Towing capacity is 4,500 pounds.Consumer Reports puts Enclave reliability at below average.Last month, some 2012 Enclaves were recalled so dealers could tighten windshield wipers to prevent blades from coming loose.

Press pics of Gigabyte's X11 lightweight laptop reportedly pop up online

Last week, Gigabyte teased us with the promise of a new bantam laptop, the X11, that would be the "lightest notebook on earth." Today, it appears the good folks at Pocket-lint have taken a bit of the wind out of the company's sails by posting a plethora of press pics of the new machine for all the world to see. Naturally, we can't say for sure that this is the forthcoming X11, but whatever it is, it's a slim little black beauty that looks to be right at home with the MacBook Airs and Ultrabooks of the world -- it's got a wedge-shaped silhouette and a modicum of external connectivity (one USB socket and one DisplayPort). Want to see more of it's ebony exterior in advance of tomorrow's official announcement? Head on down to the source link for the full spill.

GE Citizenship ? GE WattWise Mobile App Helps Restaurants Cut ...

SOURCE: General Electric (GE)

DESCRIPTION:

Cutting costs and shrinking your carbon footprint can start with changing a few light bulbs. That?s the idea behind WattWise, a GE Capital mobile application designed to help franchise restaurant operators regulate and reduce their energy costs from lighting quickly and conveniently on their mobile devices.

Running a franchise restaurant can be energy-intensive. According to the 2011 Chain Restaurant Industry Review, restaurants spend up to five times more on utilities than other commercial businesses. Lighting accounts for 13% of a restaurant?s total energy usage. And many franchisees are small-to-medium sized businesses, without the resources to conduct full-scale energy audits of their own.

When it came time to test the WattWise application, GE Capital?s Access GE team reached out to Wendy?s franchise owner and long-time customer Junior Bridgeman to see if it could improve his margins and cut his energy usage.?? Access GE focuses on ways to shares tools, resources, insights, and learnings to help GE Capital customers tackle some of their most pressing business challenges. Engagements can vary from best practice sharing sessions and customized workshops to extended coaching sessions that may continue for several months.

GE Capital took a close look at Bridgeman?s lighting costs. Using the WattWise app, GE Capital conducted lighting audits at two of Bridgeman?s Wendy?s restaurants. WattWise recommended changes to the restaurants? existing lighting solutions, explained the potential energy savings, and outlined the total expected cost to implement these changes.

The WattWise tool helped Bridgeman to identify an average energy savings of more than $500 per location. Expanded to include all of Bridgeman?s Wendy?s locations, this could result in a cost savings of over $80,000 a year.

?A simple system like this for improving light bulbs can directly impact an operator?s bottom line over the long run,? says Chris Armbruster, vice president of franchise development for Yum! Brands subsidiary Taco Bell. ?WattWise is a great way to save money and be environmentally conscious at the same time.?

Through tools like WattWise, GE Capital is delivering on GE?s commitment to create value by enabling customers to cut costs and reduce their environmental impacts.?

? I started my weight loss adventure/quest because my husband and I bought an Autocross race car.

I wanted to be the best driver I could be. Regrettably, I had a challenge participating at my previous body size.

Hello, Body Renew!

Whitney?s RIPPED class and her personal training sessions gave me more than I had ever hoped to gain from the workout experience.

Since trimming down, I have more confidence in myself, am able to keep up with my children easier, and can proudly say I can fit in my race car seat.

I of all people actually look forward to my workouts; I used to be the one watching weight loss shows eating nachos. ?

Sam Sommers: The Native American Mascot: Tribute or Stereotype?

In yet another chapter of a continuing debate, the State of Oregon announced last week that its public schools must discontinue the use of Native American nicknames and mascots. The Board of Education gave state schools until 2017 to stop using team names such as "Indians," "Chiefs," "Braves," and "Redskins." Other names such as "Warriors" will still be permitted, provided that no imagery is used referring to a particular tribe, custom, or individual.

Predictably, reaction to the order has been mixed.

Supporters of the ban assert that even if the schools that use them harbor no ill-intent, the images themselves are caricatures that perpetuate stereotypes. Opponents of the ban suggest that these names celebrate, rather than disparage Native American culture. And fans of the slippery slope argument would ask what, then, of the other sports nicknames that make reference to a particular group of people, whether in terms of region of origin (Vikings, Fighting Irish, Celtics), religion (Quakers, Saints), or occupation (Boilermakers, Engineers)?

For many people the debate comes down to one question: tribute or stereotype? And some would suggest that this is a question best posed to Native Americans directly, including the NCAA, which has previously ordered schools to change their nickname unless they can demonstrate approval from the local tribe in question.

But there's also another, arguably more compelling way to answer this question: look to the data. What, specifically, are the psychological implications of these nicknames and mascots?

A few years ago, researchers at Arizona, Stanford, and Michigan conducted a series of studies to find out. Their first experiment found evidence to support the idea that sports mascots can be a source of pride in Native American communities. In this study, high school students on an Indian reservation in Arizona who read a brief paragraph about the use of these mascots (accompanied by a photo of Chief Wahoo, the smiling logo of the Cleveland Indians) subsequently used more positive words when asked to write down their first thoughts that came to mind in describing Native Americans.

This finding indicates that mascot representations are not always regarded as negative -- and that surveys of members of Native American communities may very well indicate explicit support for the nicknames. But the question remains, what of the psychological effects of these mascots on Native American individuals? On this count, the data are not so kind to the pro-mascot case.

In follow-up studies, the same researchers again presented high school respondents with various passages and images related to Native Americans. After reading about mascots (and seeing Chief Wahoo), Native American respondents scored lower on an individual self-esteem questionnaire, as well as a measure of their sense of community worth (i.e., feelings of respect and a sense of value towards Native Americans). In fact, scores for self- and community-worth were even lower among students who had seen Chief Wahoo than they were among those who read about the common depiction of Native American communities as suffering from high rates of alcoholism, suicide, and teen pregnancy.

Perhaps most problematically, in a final study a variety of Native American mascots were shown to different groups of college student respondents. Afterward, students were asked to write about what their life would be like in one year. Those Native American students exposed to mascots were significantly less likely to use achievement-related language in anticipating their future than were students in a control condition. That is, having seen and read about mascots, Native Americans became less likely to make achievement-related predictions for themselves regarding good grades, graduating, finding a job, etc.

The data from these studies are consistent with the idea that these mascots are often viewed positively, even by members of Native American communities. At the same time, they are also consistent with the conclusion that there are negative psychological consequences to such mascots, even if those who experience these consequences can't or won't articulate them when asked.

(And, of course, there are yet other questions to be asked about the effects of such mascots. For example, to what extent do they attenuate versus exaggerate racial stereotypes held by White people? In a separate investigation published in 2011, a different set of researchers concluded that Native American mascots activated negative, but not positive, stereotypes among Whites.)

In the end, these data pose a problem for claims that these mascots are honorific and likely to enhance the self-esteem of Native Americans. Even when that is (or has recently become) the motivation behind a team name, such good intent is not sufficient to bring about good outcomes. As the authors of the paper described above explain, "American Indian mascots do not have negative consequences because their content or meaning is inherently negative. Rather... [the mascots] remind American Indians of the limited ways in which others see them."

Cannes 2012: Michael Haneke Wins Palme d'Or -- Again

Surprising precisely no-one, Michael Haneke's universally acclaimed drama Amour has won the 2012 Palme d'Or at Cannes. The honor marks back-to-back wins for the revered filmmaker -- pictured above recreating a cheerful scene from his Piano Teacher with Isabelle Huppert -- after his last film, The White Ribbon, took out the prize in 2009. It's only the second time a director has won the Palme d'Or with successive films, the previous being Bille August in '88 and '92.

Perhaps less expected was the Grand Prix (or runner-up) going Matteo Garrone's Reality, a film which had divided many critics; Ken Loach, meanwhile, proved a reliable favorite, as his comedy The Angels' Share collected the Prix du Jury (or third place honors).

The American big-hitters -- including John Hillcoat's Lawless, Andrew Dominik's Brad Pitt-starrer Killing Them Softly and Wes Anderson's festival opener Moonrise Kingdom -- went away empty-handed, as did other films -- David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, Leos Carax's Holy Motors -- that drew wildly divergent responses.

There was good news for one such loved-and-loathed effort, however, with Post Tenebras Lux winning the festival's Best Director award for Carlos Reygadas. (The same prize that went to Nicolas Winding Refn for last year's Drive.)

Mads Mikkelsen was awarded Best Actor for his much-praised performance in Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt, while Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan shared Best Actress honors for their roles in Cristian Mungiu's Beyond the Hills

Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild -- already a smash at Sundance earlier this year -- was further vindicated with the director winning Cannes' Camera d'Or, the major award for first-time filmmakers.

in the kitchen with: the best of vegan recipes | Design*Sponge

When I went to Australia earlier this year, I overdosed on egg and bacon rolls.? I sent an enthusiastic email to Grace about how I was enjoying recreating my own here at home, and she wrote me back that she is pretty much vegan these days.? I was a bit crestfallen that my enthusiasm for bacon had fallen on deaf ears, but it got me to thinking if I could ever make that transition.? I took a stroll through our archives to see what dishes we had here for vegans and I decided to just do a Best of.? We have quite a few recipes in the archives which are made with the addition of a sprinkle of cheese which would be an easily skipped ingredient but I have not included those here.? I have however tried to include quite a few recipes that can be easily personalized with your favorite ingredients.? Hope you enjoy our collection!? -Kristina

Above, Green Kitchen Stories? Portobello Mushroom Burger.? I could say so much about this burger but the photo speaks for itself.? This would definitely make my list of best burgers!? Tuck your napkin into your shirt, roll up your sleeves and have a bite!

Sharon Spain shared her recipe for homemade pickles with us a few years ago.? I sat for a while trying to conceive of how I could make a mouth-watering picture of a pickle, but took my problem to Matt Armendariz (who shot the image above) and he helped me right away with the idea of a pickle sandwich.? Don?t worry, cheese is not part of the recipe, just part of the presentation.

More fantastic vegan recipes after the jump?

If you?re making your own pickles, why not make your own bread for a sandwich?? Vanessa Rees, Brooklyn-based photographer developed this recipe for sesame pancake sandwich bread to break the monotony of catered lunches on her photography shoots.? Vanessa has updated the recipe based on your feedback.? I think this bread would make any lunch great!

?

?

Andrea Nguyen, someone I?ve dubbed the Dumpling Queen, developed this vegan wonton recipe just for us!? Dumplings are one of the best food candidates for personalization according to your own tastes.? We?ve had a few versions here on the column, all of which I?ve loved and overdosed on.

?

?Sushi? is another food that is perfect entertaining food.? It can be made to fit the palate of anyone who is eating it.? Many readers shared their own favorite combinations that they prepare at home.? I am lucky because my husband doesn?t like ?sushi? with fish or without, so whenever I make it it?s all mine.? Jill Bliss? sushi recipe just using carrots, cucumber and avocado is a classic and addictive roll!

?

Tara O?Brady pitched right for my heart when she offered a recipe for pakoras and green chutney.? Her recipe is her own version of this traditional Indian vegetable fritter, and definitely worth the try.? This really would be the perfect dish to savor with a cold drink.

?

Israeli photography and styling team Matkonation provided the answer to a years? old question when they shared their recipe for falafel with us earlier this year.? I try to save my consumption of fried foods for the times I eat outside of the house, but having a recipe for falafel might put a large dent in that rule!

?

?

Heidi Swanson, author of the beautifully written and photographed blog 101 Cookbooks, wrote one of the most beautiful books to pass through my hands in so very long.? The jury at the James Beard Foundation had it right when her book Super Natural Everyday won the ?Focus on Health? award this year (2012).? Its predecessor was nominated, also.? This recipe for roasted strawberries is from the book.? Perfect for any time of the day.

?

?

Though I intended for this Best Of to be exclusively savory, there were some flavors that I just could not leave out as we head into summer.? A beautiful fruit sorbet was a definite priority.? This recipe for plum marsala sorbet is from Kristin Silverman, the lawyer behind The Kitchen Sink blog.? It?s a perfect refreshing dessert for summer that won?t weigh you down.? An ice cream machine is worth it, just so you can make this!? But don?t worry.? Kristin has provided instructions on how to enjoy the sorbet as a granita if you don?t have a machine.

Finksburg man faces animal cruelty charges for running over kitten

Michael Almony of Finksburg faces more than three years in jail and a $6,000 fine for throwing a kitten on the ground and running over it several times in his Ford pickup truck, police said.

Baltimore County police arrested Almony, 59, of the 3300 block of Old Gamber Road, Thursday after an anonymous person turned in a video from a parking lot on Main Street in Reisterstown that shows the incident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m. April 11, police said.

The video was presented to police on May 12.

Almony allegedly threw the kitten on the ground next to a truck, got into the truck, pulled forward to run the animal over, backed up and ran over it again, pulled forward and backed up to run over it a third time, police said. Police said he then stopped to look at the animal and pulled out of the parking lot.

The kitten appeared to be a stray from a nearby litter.

Almony was charged with animal cruelty and animal mutilation. His trial is set for Sept. 5 in Catonsville. He was released on $10,000 bail.

The animal cruelty charge is a misdemeanor that could result in 90 days imprisonment and a $1,000 fine. The mutilation charge is a felony that carries a three-year jail sentence and $5,000 fine.

Deep sea animals stowaway on submarines and reach new territory

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Marine scientists studying life around deep-sea vents have discovered that some hardy species can survive the extreme change in pressure that occurs when a research submersible rises to the surface. The team's findings, published in Conservation Biology, reveal how a species can be inadvertently carried by submersibles to new areas, with potentially damaging effects on marine ecosystems.

After using the manned submersible Alvin to collect samples of species from the Juan de Fuca Ridge under the northeastern Pacific Ocean, the team discovered 38 deep-sea limpets ( Lepetodrilus gordensis) among their sample. Intriguingly this species is believed to occur only in the vents of the Gorda Ridge, which are 635 km south of the dive site.

"The big question was, how did they get over 600 kilometers from their habitat?" said Dr. Janet Voight, from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. "We discovered that the individuals must have been transported from the Gorda Ridge by our submersible. Even though we clean the submersibles after sampling we had assumed that the extreme pressure change would kill any species which are missed."

The introduction of new species to an ecosystem by humans, often inadvertently, is a big challenge to conservation. How a new species will react to new surroundings, and the effect it can have, is unpredictable. Increases in deep-sea drilling and submersible activity can increase the probability of introductions, but until now hydrothermal vents have been considered too extreme and too isolated to be a source of introduced species.

In coastal environments one of the biggest threats posed by invasive species to native species is disease, as newly introduced pathogens and parasites can cause mass mortality. Diseases that may exist in the extreme environments created by hydrothermal vents have not been well studied.

"We've discovered that it is possible to accidently introduce a species, and any potential diseases it may carry, from a deep-sea vent to a new location," concluded Voight. "This has implications for the future exploration of hydrothermal vents as it reveals the potential risk of human driven change to the ecosystem."

Painefull: The Last of the Parental Holidays

Everyone
loves a family holiday.? Or at least the
beginning of one.? Or potentially the
concept of one.? Everyone loves a
holiday, and doesn?t family just spice things up a little?

But within that broad church that is the gathering together of every available relation to drink, and dance, and drink, and eat, and drink, there?re some niche groupings.? There?s the Family Holiday Gathering, where no one goes anywhere exotic, they just converge on someone?s home and start indiscriminately breaking things and fighting over bedding.? There?s the Resort Family Crashing, where everyone does go somewhere exotic to work on their cancer-baiting sunburn and non-existent surfing skills, and 1 in 3 members decide what they really need is to do something stupidly drastic to their hair.? And let?s not forget the Family Road Trip ? 1 hour renditions of The Song That Never Ends, a gradual tour of Australia?s ?Big? things and (on very special trips) a dog vomiting in the back of the car.

After the recent return of Mother and Father Painefull from a trip to Vanuatu with two of their grandkids, I was reminded of another niche category that will always be very close to my heart ? the Parental Holiday.? The Parental Holiday comes with a Used By Date, it only really occurs during the era when your age leads to discounted prices, or your poverty leads to pity invitations.? It?s just you, your parents and the deep blue sea. With no one else to dilute the situation, all the potentially awkward encounters one could hope for are amplified.? Then squared.? Then made even more entertaining.? As with everything in life, I have a personal top 3 for the purpose of illustration: 3. Backpacking through New Zealand It was 1997.? I was too young and mum was too mature to fully understand what backpacking really actually meant.? It meant bunk beds with strangers, people smoking pot out the back, and mum (as the only licensed person in the building, and proud driver of a rental vehicle) being begged for lifts by the kind of individuals that probably spent their spare time attending beat poetry revivals.? To be fair, it only took one hostel for mum to get the drift ? we booked into B&B?s for the rest of the jaunt. 2. Lindeman Island Club Med 2003.? There was sun, surf, activities? and compulsory communal meals with everyone staying at the resort on enforced group tables.? Fortunately, as a sullen teenager who had only just tipped over the 18 mark, I wasn?t too picky with my wines.? I overcame my daily hangovers by taking up archery.? Because at Club Med holding a weapon just makes things feel better.? Sample Highlight: Instead of befriending the only other teen my age, she actually became my resort-based nemesis.? I don?t know why. In 2007 I fully appreciated just how cool my parents are.? I think you need to be old enough to see them as more than just purveyors of authority, punishment and snacks to understand that they really do know how to have fun.? When Mother and Father Painefull caught up with me during my wandering year in the northern hemisphere they were flexible, adventurous and hilarious (sometimes even on purpose).? Sample Moment: Mum spent a great deal of time discussing and negotiating over 2 glass paintings of roosters with a local man in Rovinj.? Except his English was limited and the conversation went along the lines of: Mother Painefull: These are lovely ? are paintings of roosters quite common around here? Man: (brief quizzical look) Ah yes, the cock.? The cock is very common. MP: There seems to be quite a range? Man: Yes, the cock comes in many sizes and colours.? Sometimes it?s red, sometimes orange, sometimes there are 2 cocks.? The cock is very popular. MP: I want one for me, and I wanted to get one for my daughter, perhaps a smaller one? Man: We have many sizes.? Lots of cocks.? Here?s a nice one.? Would you like a larger one?

I don?t feel like I really have to say anything else on the subject.

(AP) ? The Iowa magic that launched Barack Obama to the presidency four years ago has all but faded.

Soured by the direction of the nation and its economy, Iowa has drifted away from Obama since his 2008 caucus victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton made him the Democratic front-runner. And while he carried the state in the general election by a comfortable margin that year, polls this year have shown voters narrowly preferring Republican challenger Mitt Romney, who plans to wage his own major effort in Iowa.

Today, the Democrat who emerged Cinderella-like with a hope-filled message four years ago is sharply attacking Romney's economic credentials and his ability to grasp voters' everyday concerns.

Obama's visit Thursday to blue-collar Newton, Iowa, and his Des Moines campaign rally near where Romney once declared that corporations are people, underscored the president's own vulnerability with working-class voters and his effort to identify with the middle class.

In Newton, once the prosperous headquarters of Maytag appliances, Obama visited a wind-turbine plant to push his alternative energy agenda and delivered a message that could as well have applied to all of Iowa. "Yeah, we're facing tough times, but we're getting through them, we're getting though them together," he said.

While offering only six of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, how Iowa voters ultimately judge Obama is expected to be an important factor in the race.

"Last time it was a lot more exciting. It was a new thing," said Nancy Bobo, a Des Moines Obama volunteer and one of his earliest Iowa backers in 2008. "Today, we're all just very serious."

Obama was visiting a former Maytag Corp. appliance plant in Newton, a town devastated by the plant's closing in 2005. The plant now houses TPI Composites, a wind-turbine blade manufacturer.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has made the struggling economy the centerpiece of his campaign. But Obama can point to comparatively low 5.1 percent unemployment in Iowa, where stable financial services and strong agriculture sectors buoyed the economy while manufacturing has struggled to rebound.

Obama's Des Moines rally, his first in Iowa since announcing his candidacy for re-election, is symbolically set for the Iowa State Fairgrounds, within steps of where Romney declared last year that "corporations are people."

Romney made the comment as he argued against raising taxes as a way of shoring up Social Security and Medicare.

Members of the audience interrupted, calling for increased taxes on corporations, and Romney responded: "Corporations are people, my friend. ... Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."

The comment has been used by opponents to characterize Romney, a former private equity firm executive, as more comfortable in the boardroom than the shop floor.

Obama's campaign has emphasized episodes in which Romney's former firm closed plants and laid off workers, and has aired a stinging TV ad on the subject in Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Obama himself has struggled to attract blue-collar voters, keys to winning struggling swing working-class regions such as southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania and rural Iowa. Newton is the seat of Jasper County, Iowa, where unemployment was 7.1 percent in April, higher than Iowa's average but down sharply from last winter.

While Iowa is known for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, it also is a coveted general election state, despite its small electoral total. Democrat Al Gore carried the state by less than a percentage point in 2000, followed by Republican George W. Bush's 2-point victory in 2004.

The state shows a candidate's ability to win support in the heartland. It could help Romney in his effort to peel back states Obama won in 2008, or help Obama put Romney away.

Obama has already spent more than $2.6 million on advertising, a pace as aggressive as in any other battleground state. He's been a regular visitor, and was making his second trip in a month.

Yet the president's approval rating here has been stuck below 50 percent for over two years, softened in part by criticism from Republicans campaigning for Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Republican Terry Branstad took back the governorship easily from Democrat Chet Culver in 2010, as the GOP won back the state House and came close in the Senate.

Polls show Iowans also have become increasingly bothered by federal spending, an issue Romney stoked in Des Moines last week in a visit where he promised to shrink the deficit.

Iowans, many of whom met Obama in the 2008 campaign, also are disappointed by what they hoped would be a transcendent presidency, said J. Ann Selzer, the longtime director of The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.

"You hear disaffection. You hear them say, 'This isn't what I paid for,'" Selzer said. "The guy they sent there to recast things wasn't able to do it."

Obama made his latest trip to a swing state while his campaign manager, in Washington, privately updated Senate Democrats on the state of the race. Officials said Jim Messina told lawmakers the president has several possible paths to collecting the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory in November.

But Messina also noted that Romney, the Republican Party and allied super PACs are likely to have a great deal of money to spend. Obama vastly outspent Republican John McCain in winning the White House four years ago, an advantage that Democrats appear unlikely to command in 2012.

Romney senses the opening.

He, too, has cultivated an Iowa network. Indeed, he campaigned aggressively for the 2008 caucuses during his narrowly losing bid for the state's delegates. And his campaign has begun running television ads in Iowa.

Romney and the Republican National Committee have hired state directors and are hiring staff to run a dozen or more offices planned for Iowa.

While Obama campaigned here, Romney spent Thursday visiting an inner city charter school in west Philadelphia. Romney was to spend the weekend in La Jolla, Calif., with his family.

'American Idol' Finale Report Card: Phillip Phillips Sews It Up

With the season 11 title on the line, Phillips delivers big-time, while Jessica Sanchez can't live up to the hype.
By James Montgomery

Phillip Phillips performs on the "American Idol" finale on Tuesday
Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

And there you have it. "American Idol" wrapped up performances on Tuesday night with a scintillating finale that pitted growl against gravitas, mumble versus melisma, stoicism opposing stank. Yes, it was Phillip Phillips v. Jessica Sanchez, in a battle for not only the season 11 crown, but the It was, needless to say, a show for the ages — as Seacrest put it, "East Coast versus West" — one that ... oh, who am I kidding? It was basically just the same thing we've been getting for something like 46 weeks now.

In short, Sanchez did Whitney and Celine. Phillips grumbled and twitched through Ben E. King and Billy Joel. Girls in the audience squealed. Steven seemed heavily medicated. And J.Lo revealed that she's apparently never heard a Mumford & Sons song before. If there was a more fitting way to cap this rather ho-hum season of "Idol," I can't think of it.

Where the two truly managed to separate themselves was in their final performances, in which they sang their potential "coronation" songs, and — I can't believe I'm saying this — it was Phillips who stood head and shoulders above the prodigiously talented Sanchez, delivering the goods on a ready-for-radio tune called "Home." In doing so, he probably locked up the championship (though one could argue that he did that the moment he auditioned and J.Lo said he was handsome).

But who won the night? Here, for the final time this season, is our "American Idol" report card, a round-by-round, blow-by-blow recap of the fight for the season 11 title. Get excited. Or something.

Round One

Jessica Sanchez: "Idol" mastermind Simon Fuller had her do Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," which was a good — if slightly safe — choice. Predictably, Sanchez delivered the goods, putting some certified stank on it and proving once again that she's the (second-best) singer in the competition. You could argue that, as with all of her performances, she never truly connected with the song's heart-wrenching sentiments, but that's basically flogging a dead horse at this point. Oh, and if she had any prayer of winning this thing, she really needed to take some risks tonight. This was certainly a good performance, but it was in no way an edgy one. B

Phillip Phillips: He won the "Idol" coin toss and decided to defer to the second half (maybe he wanted to kick with the wind or something). Fuller chose Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" for him, which wasn't going to silence the detractors who say he's not current but was definitely in his wheelhouse. He basically just mush-mouthed his way through this one and made a sweet guitar face, but, as with all P-squared performances, you either loved it or you hated it. Actually, I was somewhere in between. Definitely not his worst — rather, just more of the same. C+

Round Two

Phillips: Oh good, he's doing "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" again, which was probably my least favorite performance all season. When he first sang it back in March, I congratulated him for "prov[ing] it was possible to suck the life out of even the most jovial of tunes," and I don't feel much differently now, though he gets bonus points for hiring the "Star Wars" cantina band to back him up. J.Lo called it "authentic Phillip," which is basically an oxymoron on par with "jumbo shrimp." Still he won this round, almost by default, as you'll read in a second. C+

Sanchez: And the wheels start to come off. Rather than showcase a different side of her — like when she did Jazmine Sullivan's "Stuttering" — J. Sanch decided to revisit the beautiful-yet-bland "The Prayer." We already know she can sing anything, so it would've been nice to see her go for it all here. And while her performance was appropriately pretty, light and airy, full of power and restraint, it most definitely wasn't going to move any swing voters in her direction. This was not the time to lay it up. C-

Round Three

Phillips: If (when) he wins the season 11 crown, he'll be singing "Home," which could charitably be described as "Mumford Lite" (or "Diet Coldplay"). Having said that, it was also the perfect song for him, one that made you believe that he could actually have a career as a contemporary soft-rock crooner. J.Lo declared, "There's nothing on the radio that sounds like that," once again proving why she's a great person to be judging the search for the next great pop star. This was probably Phillips' best performance of the season, which is why I'm begrudgingly giving him an A.

Sanchez: Yeesh. She was saddled with the dreadful coronation ballad "Change Nothing," which sounded like it was lifted from some Disney film circa 1993. Or an awards-show "In Memoriam" package from 1989. She did her best — the second half picked up steam — but this was a terrible choice for her, one that all the judges rightfully ripped, particularly Randy, who took a moment out from admiring his pin to note, "I did not love the song. ... You've got urban in you," while Jimmy Iovine cackled in the crowd. Nice, dude. To her credit, Sanchez also pooped all over the tune, though watching her, you got the sense she knew her performance had done her in. And she's right. C-

So, with two rounds to one, I'm giving the "Idol" finale to Phillip Phillips. Which means he's a lock to take home the title on Wednesday (May 23) night (just like I predicted he would back in January). Long may he reign as season 11 champion — though, if things don't work out, I suspect he knows a good pawn shop where he could definitely get some cash for his "AI" crown. Heck, Lee DeWyze dropped his off just last week.

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Maine needs a healthy Head Start or we will fall behind ? Opinion ...

?Corporations are people? Mitt Romney is often quoted, arguing that what is good for corporations is good for people. But this is a backwards way of looking at the truth; it?s not the cart that pushes the horse. If corporations are made of people, then what is good for people is good for corporations.

There is always talk that Maine is not business-friendly. But if we really want to attract business, the question we should be asking is, ?How can we be more family-friendly?? How can we improve the quality of life here in Maine so this is the place where people want to continue to live and raise their families?

I met Paul at a Birth Roots parenting class, a new father, like me, of a beautiful baby girl. Paul works for a company with affiliates in Chicago and Portland and he told me he chooses to live in Maine even though it means he makes 20 percent less than his peers in Chicago.

Paul isn?t the only one making this choice. People always are moving to Maine from big cities such as New York because they want a different way of life and they bring their business and their clients with them.

There is something about living in Maine that transcends pure economic rationale, something about the beauty and the community that nourishes the soul. In Maine, you feel you can live better even with less money. But Maine didn?t just happen this way by accident, it took us communally investing in our future and valuing what is truly priceless.

So what can we do to make Maine the most family-friendly state? Cutting Head Start, as the Maine State Legislature just did, is the exact opposite of what we want to do. Research continuously has shown that early childhood education is the best investment we can make. A study in California?s San Bernardino County showed society receives nearly $9 in benefits for every $1 invested in Head Start children. These benefits include increased earnings, employment, family stability, decreased welfare dependency, crime costs, grade repetition and special education.

Failure to support early childhood education is catastrophic for our country and our children. The argument that by spending this money now we are mortgaging our children?s future simply cannot be made. If we don?t make this investment now there may be no family home to mortgage.

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce needs to back the reinstitution of full funding to Head Start. In fact, they need to advocate increased funding. These children are the innovators and business owners of the future.

If we want Maine and America to stay in business, investing in our children and our families is the only way to remain globally competitive. The bumper sticker says: ?Maine, the way life should be.? Let?s try to keep it that way.

Please contact members of your local Chamber of Commerce and tell them to use their lobbyists in Augusta so putting families first is Maine?s first order of business.
